THE BLUE HACH SPELLER

CELESTE HEADLEE
Author of We Nead to Talk

Headlee, an award-winning radio journalist and author of Speaking of Race (2021), focuses on the women who
risked their safety to help Black Americans learn to read and write after the end of the Civil War. One of these
women, Carrie, was the author's own great-grandmother, and although once enslaved, she dismantled barriers
throughout her life. Enslavers in the antebellum era forbade anyone to teach enslaved people how to read and
write, and during and after slavery, many women risked their lives to teach these essential skills. These
daughters of freedom fought for Black people's equal access to education, voting rights, health care, home
ownership, and more, and also built schools, hospitals, and other needed institutions. They raised the literacy
rate among Black Americans from 5 percent in 1860 to 20 percent in 1870, up to 70 percent in 1910. Freedom's
Daughters shines a much-needed light on the women who put their lives on the line to help others.
Headlee's engaging writing style smoothly incorporates her extensive research, and she also makes
connections to today's political climate. It is a must-read for those looking for stories of Black women's
advocacy and triumph, and of fighting back when obstacles seem insurmountable. Essential for public and
academic libraries.

His book is out today. So is mine. Can we sell more of my book about African American history, literacy, and resistance than Alito sells? That would be so awesome.

Five star book review of Freedom's Daughters that says,
I finished this book in two days, devouring every word. I honestly feel like I will need to go back and listen again at some point, as it is power
packed with such informative history. This should be required reading for high school students moving forward. This history needs to taught, and immersed into the greater narrative of the history of this country. What a powerful read!
