poem: deviation
We entered through the vestibule
just by the outer door.
On the far wall was a photograph,
warm and inviting - the old bistro
before modernization.

To the right a counter
a stern faced woman
a guest list before her
and a list of the establishment rules
behind.

I'd remembered it as cozy, relaxed,
unpretentious - whose rules were,
at best,
flexible, and fluctuated
according to the mood of the patrons.

Few of us from those old days
would be standing here,
most would turn away
disappointed.

I glanced at Helen,
she looked happy.
This is what she had come for,
not for my past, but for our future.
And for the first time
I felt a deviation.

The new bistro had a magical vestibule
A place where physics and gravity didn’t rule
It somehow managed to grow and fluctuate
And then be flexible, decrease and titivate
