Let me have a #crack instead.
Watch me make a mark;
Step aside and let me try,

soon i'll drink
the last of your coffee
air con thrumming—
the musty smell
trapped in the carpet

you declare me
wanting a heart
bound in baling wire
i clear the last of the roots
and tamp down the dirt

fridge magnets
decade-old pictures
your love note
my fingers
tacky with glue

a nocturne
unwound and tinny
fulvous music sheets
i stand en pointe
to your unrelenting stare

rain smell
and exhaust
this overcast pre-dawn
my phone
bathes me

in the pool
before dawn
my arms sluice the water
each stroke drags
the lead of you

mccartney sings blackbird
while i do laps
missed split time
i’m now near the age
my mother died of cancer

cider mills
donuts and hayrides
divorce decree stamped
when you were seven months old
you slept in your swing

your to-do list
undimming
on the iphone
the garage an oven
i sweep the shaving from the floor

chopping the roots
of the tree that couldn’t grow
approaching whine
the white suv wavers
in the afternoon heat
