He pinches the light with his thumb and forefinger and stretches it, putty-like, until it’s long and fibrous. Then he loops it over his finger and shapes it into a tiny knot. He flicks it in my face. I sputter and sneeze. My head fills with a warm, fuzzy glow. “What’s the Moth King planning?” he asks. “I don’t know,” my mouth replies. Shit. My brain did not authorize those words.

It opens its fanged mouth and makes a noise somewhere between the wail of a grieving child and the sound the demon ghost lady made in Raiders of the Lost Ark when the Nazis opened the Ark of the Covenant. I indulge in the thrill of victory for about a second and a half before the Moth King wraps his shadowy arms around me. I hate porting, but I've never been this glad to be whisked into a cold tempest of darkness and nausea.

“So did you eat a poisoned apple?” I say, trying not to let my discomfort seep into my voice. “Get bit by a radioactive spider?” His mouth quirks up. He’s amused. I amuse him. If this was a real date, I might even congratulate myself on being so witty. “I was hunting a bear. It got the better of me.” I pop one of the roast potatoes in my mouth, and it’s the best roast potato I’ve ever eaten. Apparently, schrats are like hairy little Gordon Ramsays who never bathe. My mouth starts spewing nervous snark. “So, did the bear have rabies or something? I didn’t know you could contract shadowy monster syndrome from a bear. They left that part out of The Revenant.” He raises his eyebrows. I guess he’s never seen The Revenant.

Unless I’m mistaken, there’s a hole in the world, and it’s in the Prairie Creek Redwoods. If only the National Park Service had signposted the stupid thing, I wouldn’t be sitting here right now. Nothing about this place says, Hey campers, beware child-stealing mist demons. The trees look like trees. The redwood burl that crosses the ground between them is ugly but not uncanny. It looks like a gigantic woody tumor, or, more poetically, like the two trees had a knife fight and spilled each other’s guts all over the forest floor. But the average park visitor would not look at it and think supernatural threshold.

Lucky for me, there’s no way that guy’s lieutenant is going to believe him when he says, “A monster tree vomited oil on me and then his friend disarmed me.”

“Did it work?” she asks. I’m about to reply with optimism when I notice a small flash of movement at the end of the first piece of scrap wood. As we watch in impotent silence, one of the nails works its way out of the board like a worm boring through rotten wood. It pauses, as if making a point, then tumbles onto the floor next to the pile of decomposed duct tape. The second nail does the same thing, then the third. The strip of wood swings down, hanging by its last nail, until that one pops out, too, and the board falls to Earth with a clatter. The second board does the same thing. The door swings open.

The king is silent for a moment, then he turns and makes a backward hand motion at Veradis. Veradis glowers and slinks out the door. The schrats follow him. The Moth King picks up his chair and moves it to the other side of the table so it’s facing me. He sits, puts his hands on his knees, and leans forward. His posture is so human, I almost believe his mortal body still exists somewhere inside his repulsive exterior, that I’m looking at a man wearing a macabre suit of armor. That’s worse, somehow. Thinking he’s inside there, vulnerable and human, hiding behind an ugly, indestructible facade, acting like the monster everyone thinks he is.

The feathery tops of the chicken’s legs loom over me. Mercifully, they do not appear to be attached to the underside of a chicken, which means there at least isn’t any danger that the damn thing might lay an egg on me while I’m trying to get Jahnari’s attention. “Jahnari!” I call again. I’m about to give up and go stalking aimlessly off into the wilderness when Jahnari’s cackly voice says, “Hello, girl. Come up.” I stand there for way too long waiting for her to complete that thought because that can’t be all of it. She doesn’t say anything else. “How?” I call back. Is there an elevator in one of those chicken legs? Does she have a Star Trek-style transporter, perhaps?
