My novel is partly about labor, so today's word showed up a few times. Here, there is a labor strike. #FrankMatsura takes the opportunity to help his fellow Japanese send photos and letters back home to their families. #WIPsnips #exhaust

I'm still working hard on recording an audiobook.

I took the opportunity to photograph some of the men with their proudest belongings. Tachibana posed with a bicycle I had not seen before and had never seen him ride. Some hoped the photographs could be used by their families to secure them picture brides. Others sent back photos to family, showing them in their best clothes, or the best they could borrow, with family photos and mementos behind them, to show that they were alive and thriving. I was using my camera to produce fictions, but fictions that served the subjects’ needs. Honest portraits would have showed the grinding labor, the exhaustion, and perhaps the saving grace, camaraderie among the workers. A few men who could not read or write dictated letters to me that they would to send to their families. The recipients were not literate either, but a priest could be found who would read the letters aloud. Every single one painted a reassuring picture of their life in Alaska. They were working hard, they said, and making money that they would send home at the end of the season. Send news from home, they said.

A gust of wind blew at them, and a violent shiver took hold of her. “You’re cold.” Owen pushed the door back in place, then circled her with his arms. He was as wet as she was, and probably just as chilled, but there was something comforting about his solid presence behind her. His arms around her. She could feel each of his inhales… each smooth exhale, like riding on waves. Exhaustion rolled over her, and she leaned back, resting her head on his chest and closing her eyes. His arms tightened, and his warm breath puffed on her neck.

A large, roughly circular area had been hollowed out in the rock. Cerel heard a trickle of water running through it. The horses whickered at the welcoming smell of a nearby haystack.

He watched them stream into the corral. The
ath'kura, herded up with Zephyr and Mistral, chose to be confined with them. Even Lalash! He didn't know what to make of her decision, being [redacted] among them. But given the limited space within and the danger without, she lacked any better options. The
others habitually deferred to her, so he supposed she'd be fine. The horses had plenty of room and simply stood together EXHAUSTED, waiting to be fed.
"We'll be back," he assured them.

“Knees higher, please,” she ordered, and he obeyed to a degree. Marcus was a soft human, limited in muscle and stamina. He wasn’t like Hal at all. In fact, that was an interesting piece of evidence for his case that he wasn’t artificially constructed. If you were going to build a person, you would surely make them light and athletic, like Talyn. You wouldn’t make them like Marcus, a product of his own lifestyle.
“Twenty-six more, and we are done,” she said next. “Twenty-four. Twenty-two.”
“It’s easier… when you… don’t count!” Marcus spluttered as he jogged on the spot.
“What was that? Eighteen.”
“I… I said…”
“Fourteen.
“Never mind.”
“Ten…”
A point in Marcus’ favour, he tried his best. Sera didn’t think a human male of his age was supposed to be rendered to exhaustion so quickly, but he did push himself to obey her wishes. If seeing him gasp and sweat on the floor of the medical room, like right now when she hit zero on her countdown, was not particularly attractive, she appreciated that he had made an effort.
