The fastest structure check: paste just the first sentence of every paragraph into a new doc and read them in order. If they don't add up to an argument on their own, polishing sentences won't save it. Fix the order first. (It's called a reverse outline.)

Intro, before:
"Throughout history, people have had many opinions about the Industrial Revolution."
After:
"The Industrial Revolution didn't just change how people worked. It changed what time meant."
Same topic. One clears its throat. The other makes a claim.

Try this on your next draft: delete the first sentence of your intro. Read it again. Usually it gets better. The first sentence is often just you warming up, and graders can tell.

Quick thesis test: could a reasonable person disagree with it?
"Hamlet is about revenge." Nobody would argue. Fail.
"Hamlet is less about revenge than about being afraid to act." Someone could push back. Pass.
If no one could disagree, you have a topic, not a thesis.

One hour, one essay:
0-10: thesis + 3 topic sentences
10-40: body, ugly first draft
40-50: intro + conclusion
50-60: reread, fix what you trip over
Intro goes last: you can't introduce an argument you haven't made. In a blue book, leave the top half page blank for it.

Blue books are back. Sales at UC Berkeley jumped 80% in two years as profs moved essays in-class to dodge AI. So "write a solid essay in 60 minutes, by hand" is now an exam skill, not a procrastination skill. 🧵
