In my #ENVSCOMM26 class today, peer editing exercises! For this, I anonymize students' essay drafts, print them, & give these & pens to the students so they can edit for format & content. After discussing their experience with a partner ("pair & share"), they'll try to find the original author. Fun!

For my #ENVSCOMM26 students, new information from @yaleclimatecomm.bsky.social on about how climate change has been mentioned less in the media over the past 2 years, even as its visible effects worsened. #scicomm

Interesting new study on climate-change communicators, pertinent for my #ENVSCOMM26 students as we discuss ways to reach more people when talking about climate change. #scicomm

Terrific example of #scicomm for my #ENVSCOMM26 students to watch & learn, about the Billion Oyster Project in NYC, which aims to replenish oyster reef there for all of the good reason. Also thematically apt for #MolluscMonday! 🧪🦪

In my #ENVSCOMM26 class today, in-class writing on prompt explaining what Dr. @katharinehayhoe.com means by the "moral necessity" of using renewable energy & greater energy efficiency instead of fossil fuels. Then on to Chapters 18-20 of 'Saving Us:' Why You Matter, What I Do, Why Talking Matters.

Important point for my #ENVSCOMM26 students to know, that domestic water for drinking, cleaning, cooking, etc. can be limited by a large number of factors, even in places with supposedly ample supplies. Data centers add yet another stressor. How to best explain this problem to others?

I traveled with my family to Hawaii where we hiked Mauna Kea at sunset. At the summit, we experienced a breathtaking view of the night sky. Unobstructed from light pollution, we could see the entire Milky Way. This world without human interference led me to environmental sciences. #ENVSCOMM26

This summer I had the amazing opportunity to travel to The Gambia. I was blessed to experience the environment routinely from my daily walks, to seeing colorful lizards that I don’t see in the U.S., to seeing very large insects and the beach quite frequently! It was incredibly tranquil.

The concern for the next generation not being able to enjoy the winters as I did lead me to minor in Environmental Science and try to make the world better than I found it.

Growing up in Wisconsin, I loved winter sports. Whether it was skiing, snowboarding, or ice fishing, I loved being outside in the crisp winter air. As I grew up I saw this season that I love shrinking

It made me more conscious about separating waste at home and curious about the larger systems behind our waste. Looking back, it was one of my first experiences that sparked my interest in environmental science. #ENVSCOMM26

In fifth grade, a classmate’s parents came to school to talk about their work managing our community’s waste segregation and recycling facility. Through them, I learned about different types of plastics, compost, hazardous waste, and the amount of work that goes into sorting waste. #ENVSCOMM26

For as long as I can remember, I’ve always been fascinated with the natural world.

Each summer, my family and I return to a cabin on Loon Lake, spending most of the time fishing. I appreciate the wait for a great catch, as it adds a calming aspect to my life while connecting me to nature; I listen to the birds, observe the structures in the lake, and watch the sunset. #ENVSCOMM26

I knew env science was my calling when I went on a month-long backpacking trip in Yosemite. Living in the wilderness, you become connected with the natural world in a way we aren't normally. Waking up with the sun, getting water from streams, every part of life relied on the environment.#ENVSCOMM26

Environmental science has been a topic of great interest to me since I was 5. At this age I experienced a natural disaster - a landslide - in Trinidad. A wet season rainy spell washed away roads and houses near my grandma's place, leaving us stranded. This forever stained me.

My senior year research project tested the effects of pesticides on coral. Everything seemed to go wrong. I was fighting salt levels, temperature, time, and at the end, thoughts of doubt and failure. Then I asked myself, “What is all this for?” And that’s when it clicked.

My biggest connection to Environmental Science and my ecology and conservation major was volunteering with Lifeline Puppy Rescue in Denver. Working with dogs has shown me how important an animals surrounding are to their health. This helped me discover animal welfare and conservation.

In high school, I spent a week away at summer camp in the Lacawac Sanctuary in Pennsylvania. My fondest memory was spending summer solstice floating in the middle of the glacial lake, watching the sun set on the longest day. This was when I knew environmental science was for me.

The most memorable volunteer opportunities for me have been forest and trail restoration projects in NY parks. I loved working hands-on in invasive species management, clean-up, and more. Learning about the purpose of what we were doing sparked my interest in the environmental sciences! #ENVSCOMM26
