Devolution must mean restructuring government, not adding another layer. Yorkshire needs one elected regional body, not 4 mayors, clear responsibility and proper scrutiny — replacing duplication, not adding to it.

The Guardian says, power without proper scrutiny is dangerous. The mayoral model is messy, inconsistent, and far too concentrated. One person shouldn’t hold all the cards. An elected Yorkshire Parliament — now that’s real devolution.

We agree and are against ever larger “non-place” councils, but not to retreat from devolution. It is to do devolution properly. A Yorkshire Parliament with real powers and funding, accountable to Yorkshire people, alongside strong councils.
