#EMCA shows that and how humans manage interactions - effectively, less effectively, and sometimes in ways that are mundane yet powerfully poignant - but, like much of interaction, momentary and would not be identified, described, and shared in order end up in a list of "discrete aspects."

From the article: "A model from OpenAI has been trained to assess more than 50 discrete aspects of each phone call" - which aspects? It would be interesting to see what crossover there is between these 50 and things that would be endorsed by #EMCA research findings.

There are many stories about AI and 'conversational' products, but this one in particular (about the recording and analysis of probate calls in Co-op Legal Services) had many disappointing, frustrating, and worrying components - from the perspective of conversation analytic research #EMCA.

yo so my bestie comrade-in-analysis and her student (now our research assistant) have just had this cool work come out. About the relation between racialisation and visual description in calls to the NZ Police. I think it has the juice. #emca

bpspsychub.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

Screenshot from the top of the article. The logo for the British Journal of Social Psychology is at the top. The Title is 'Racial categories and visual descriptions in police emergency calls'. The authors listed next are Paige Winthrop and Emma Tennent. Below that is the abstract. it reads "Taken-for-granted presumptions about race are incorporated into the operating logic of many institutions. In emergency police calls, racialization is routinely used to accomplish visual descriptions of persons of interest. This use of racial categories relies on and reproduces inferences about race as visually discernible. These inferences are bound up in colonial histories and ongoing racist violence and discrimination. Our discursive psychology study documents how participants make links between racial category membership and visual appearance and orient to racialization as a delicate but necessary part of an emergency call. We thus show how examining racialization can illustrate the workings of racial inferences even in the absence of overt orientations to prejudice. Understanding how racialization is built into the institutional infrastructure provides an important ‘upstream’ perspective on issues of racialized policing and is a necessary first step in moves towards social justice."

#EMCA folks... I have no idea how fast I am as a transcriber. How long does it take you to transcribe 1 minute of two party conversation into Jeffersonian style (not counting for translation, just single language)?
