The light is soft, flat and diffuse, with no sun; the colour palette is subdued and earthy — browns, ochres, moss greens, greys — against which the white dress reads as the brightest element in the picture. The mood is quiet, intimate and atmospheric, the two figures small within an expansive, slightly brooding natural setting.
