We've been reworking how our 2nd grade math pages are spaced. Take the "Adding whole tens, 3 addends" sheet: 20 + 30 + 40 needs room to think, not a cramped margin. Bigger gaps, fewer problems per page. Small change, but our kiddos stopped erasing holes through the paper.

Quick tip for doubles: have your first grader show the fact with both hands. 5 + 5? Five fingers, five fingers, count on up. Once they see the pattern, the sums stick. Our "Adding doubles" worksheet walks them through doubles with sums from 0 to 20.
If your 2nd graders are still shaky on area, let them build it. Our "Composing rectangles from squares" worksheet has them fill rectangles with equal squares and count, so rows and columns start to click before the multiplication comes. Free to print, and great for partner work.

I made a coloring page brochure for students as one of my librarian homework assignments. The instructor suggested I redo it in color. Then, she changed her mind and graded it anyway but still thinks it should be colored.
🫤 It's a coloring page. I don't have the heart to tell her. #elementary
MLK Day is coming up in January, and our first graders are ready for more than "he had a dream." Big ideas like fairness and courage land well at this age. Our 1st grade Martin Luther King, Jr. social studies printable is a gentle place to start the conversation this week.
Quick question for the 1st grade crowd: what everyday sign do your kiddos recognize first? We're always surprised how fast they spot the stop sign but blank on handicap parking. Our "Signs in a Parking Lot" social studies worksheet covers them all. What would you add to the list?
Got a second grader who loves maps? This free social studies page has them write about Amsterdam, the Netherlands, then color the picture. Writing practice and world geography in one sitting, and the coloring keeps them at the table a few minutes longer.
