Ting Kau Bridge, Hong Kong, photographed in 2013. A long cable-stayed bridge crosses a bay beneath an overcast, misty sky. Three pale green towers support sweeping fans of cables, with wooded hills and buildings fading into the background.Edward Hopper’s Queensborough Bridge (1913). An atmospheric oil painting showing a large steel bridge crossing a river, with tall towers, sweeping structural curves and substantial stone supports. Muted greens, greys and browns create a hazy scene, with buildings and trees visible beneath the bridge.

Hopper was a slow and methodical painter and “Office in a Small City” was the only painting that he produced in 1953. He began this work in Truro, Massachusetts, where he and his wife Jo spent their summers for decades, and finished it later after returning to New York City. His study of and fascination with light resulted in the clear colors that are typical of a Hopper artwork. The scene of a solitary figure, glimpsed through a side window of a corner office, invites the viewer to create his/her own narrative for what is going on. The figure is high up in an office building, unaware that he is being watched; “Office in a Small City” has a touch of voyeurism delivered with Hopper’s Realist style. Hopper composed several paintings of people he spotted in buildings while riding the elevated train through New York City; this one has that feel to it. In the 1950s, New York City was bustling and growing at a very fast pace but Hopper has captured a quiet moment with one isolated man; the cityscape beyond his office does not appear particularly busy. Hopper was the master of loneliness coupled with beauty in his scenes. And, always, that crystal clear light is the star.
