[some-subscribed-rss] New Post: Best of #econtwitter - Week of August 23, 2026: good tweets, by An Economist https://www.bestofecontwitter.com/p/best-of-econtwitter-week-of-august-da0

Teaser:

This week’s #econtwitter roundup kicks off with a lively debate sparked by an FT article on how economics is changing—is the field becoming “trivial”? Then dive into a thread on why experts can’t agree on whether AI will deliver a century of progress in ten years, data on DEI efforts in academic hiring, and a Nobel laureate’s hot take on research productivity. Plus: charts on manufacturing decline, less-educated men’s lost economic status, and more. All the best tweets, public goods, and visualizations from the week of August 23.

[some-subscribed-rss] New Post: Best of #econtwitter - Week of August 23, 2026: paper summaries, by An Economist https://www.bestofecontwitter.com/p/best-of-econtwitter-week-of-august-db9

Teaser:

This week’s Best of #econtwitter curates the paper summaries and econ-Twitter highlights actually worth your scroll. The idiosyncratic favorites include a forthcoming AER paper on Britain during the Napoleonic Wars: when mass military recruitment drains the labor supply, wages surge, sex ratios shift, and farmers start adopting threshing machines. From there, the newsletter moves through more paper summaries spanning taxes, technology, and other research making the rounds — plus a plea for someone to build an econ PhD program ranking with the same energy as prediction-market takes. If you want the good parts of the timeline without the doomscrolling, this is the place to start.

Great atmosphere at the first Freiburg Replication Games today: Saturday, late-summer sunshine — and everyone fully engaged.

Teams in Freiburg and online are stress-testing published conflict research, comparing approaches, and networking along the way.

Check my latest working paper!

I study the effects of the avocado production in Mexico on non-lethal crimes.

I find that the increasing production has increased the number of extortion cases, while other crimes (threats and kidnappings) are less robust.
