An eastern chipmunk perches on a rock in the late afternoon sun. It's sitting up on its bottom with its front paws held in front on its belly. It has paused its munching of a large acorn, which lays by its feet. On the ground, in the background are many acorns, in moss and grass. This is only a very small area of ground under the oaks, blanketed by acorns. Fun facts: This is a mast year for acorns, meaning a massive production year for the nuts. It happens every 2-5 years. Our last mast years were 3 and 4 years ago. A mature oak can produce over 10,000 acorns. We have 5 large oaks directly around our house. We have deer, chipmunks and squirrels, but they don't eat nearly enough. That's a lot of raking and moving acorns, which are not easy to move! When the wind blows, the trees release a barrage of nuts, falling like little bombs. Sometimes it sounds like firecrackers hitting the driveway! It's like walking on marbles - the big ones, and dangerous to be beneath the trees, for people and cars!

While walking through the woods today, I saw this cute #EasternChipmunk sitting on a log. It did not move at all, even when I made chipping noises, so probably wasn't used to seeing people (Assabet River NWR, Maynard, Mass. - 9/23/26) 🥰🐿️🤎

A small Eastern Chipmunk with mostly reddish-brown fur, a white front, and dark brown and white stripes along its face and back. This little one was siting on a fallen brown log with patches of green lichen. There was a brown stick above its head, and brown, red and green leaves in the blurred background. Seen along a wooded trail at Asset River National Wildlife Refuge in Maynard, Massachusetts.
