Demanding food during a famine and trying to prevent the rich from exporting it at a profit are moral acts. But on #ThisDayInHistory in 1846, British Royal Dragoons opened fire on starving people who tried to seize grain from the docks and from bakeries in #Dungarvan, #Ireland.

#Dungarvan is a gem.

A charming historic town with a population of 10,000. A benign climate. Stunning coastline.

But it's blighted by cars. Streets and squares which could be transformed if made car-free are instead dedicated to parking on a disproportionately massive scale.

The late lamented @frankmcdonald60.bsky.social used to describe Galway's absurd traffic problem as "Carmageddon".

#Dungarvan looks little different, in terms of car culture.

The greenway is a top class amenity, and a pleasure to cycle on.

The town itself is blighted with cars and motor traffic.

DUNGARVAN LEADING THE WAY WITH SHARED SPACE CONCEPT IN IRELAND
The new design of Grattan Square is based on the Shared Space concept, widely used in Europe but
relatively new to Ireland. The design approach is adopted where there is a need to redress the
balance between pedestrian movement and vehicular dominance. The previous Dungarvan Town
Council unanimously approved this project which has been incorporated under Policy INF 9 of the
Dungarvan Town Development Plan 2013-2018
The project has been funded through the Go Dungarvan project wherein Dungarvan was chosen as a
Smarter Travel Demonstration Town and allocated funding of approximately €7million over a 5 year
period to invest into a variety of Smarter Travel projects. Smarter Travel is the transport policy for
Ireland that sets out how the vision of a sustainable travel and transport system can be achieved in
towns across Ireland.
One of the key objectives of the Go Dungarvan project is to reduce vehicle speeds through the busy
town centre and make the space more conducive to a safer environment for both pedestrians and
vehicles. The Grattan Square scheme is central to this transformation of the town centre, achieved in
part by removing a degree of certainty from drivers – removing signage, street markings and kerbs in
order to reintroduce the civic-minded sensibility of courtesy and sharing, encouraging car drivers
and pedestrians to be mindful of each other.
The removal of kerbs also assists people with limited mobility to use the space more freely. The
introduction of tactile paving, the retention of signalised crossings at the north/south junctions and
a well-defined perimeter route assist people with visual impairments to use the space. There are car
parking spaces designated for people with disabilities, as well as parent and child spaces.

pedestrians use the spac…Calls for development of Dungarvan bypass as town set to go ‘beyond its capacity’

Calls have been made for the development of a Dungarvan bypass, with the town set to go “beyond its capacity” in the near future.

The issue was raised by Fianna Fáil councillor Tom Cronin at the June plenary meeting of Waterford City and County Council.

Cllr Cronin said: “About 10 or 12 years or maybe a bit longer than that, there were surveys done for an outdoor bypass for our main town in the county, which is Dungarvan.

“There were three routes chosen at that time and then it was narrowed down to one route.

“It seems to me that the whole thing has been shelved because I’ve heard nothing about it in the past ten years on this route that was chosen.”

He concluded by asking whether plans for the by-pass had been “thrown in the bin”.

In response to Cllr Cronin, Director of Services Gabriel Hynes outlined the current status of plans for the bypass.

Mr Hynes said: “In relation to the Dungarvan bypass, we have a line there and that’s reserved.

“It’s my view that that should be progressed and could be progressed in the shorter term as well and that’s needed from a safety point of view but it’s also needed to ensure Dungarvan can grow as it needs to grow.

“As we roll out more housing developments in Dungarvan, the N25 through Dungarvan will be beyond its capa…
