"The Drum Tower (Taiko-ro) is located within the Ōtani Temple complex in Kyoto—one of two sites associated with the Ōtani branch of Buddhism (the Shinshū Ōtani-ha school)—near the Gion district and Kiyomizu-dera. The complex houses a historic structure known as the Taikoto or Taiko-ro. Historically, before the advent of telephones and modern clocks, monks would strike the giant drum housed in the tower to announce the time and coordinate daily activities and temple rituals."
