Qifrey will one day define his life in 'eras', even if he does not call them such. It is simply that he can butcher himself easily into fragments, cutting through joints and fat to create befores and afters. There is the void, then innocence, then promise, then false freedom, then giver, then peace. Of these cuts, it is only in innocence (from coffin to oath) that he is allowed to die. It is only then that, on the worst of all days, he is allowed to walk into the wall of water and hope he drowns. He only tries it twice. Both times, he is foiled by Olly.

You know this." There is a few ticks of silence before Olruggio replies, "Aye. But you don't have to torture yourself for it." Qifrey just hums, and Olly sighs. This is what the canyon between them has become. Olruggio remembers, and still Qifrey can say nothing.
