I like it when #DorothyDunnett redeems a character you spend chapters sneering at bc I'm like "you're going to kill this person off eh"

@bokemonpie.bsky.socialthe duke of savoy, the duke of milan, the exiled dauphin louis xi, the strozzi family, Anselm Adorne, the dyeing industry and how alum was a big deal, all that jazz
on ch 23
@bokemonpie.bsky.socialwait a minute are Katelina and Claes about to get it on in #HouseOfNiccolo (ch20). These are much more graphic descriptions than of #LymondChronicles
a difference of going from 30s to 60s #DorothyDunnett
@bokemonpie.bsky.socialThe moral lesson from #DorothyDunnett: if you like girls and like talking to them and listening you will be smart like Claes. If you don't then you will be teped like Julius. On Ch 20.
@bokemonpie.bsky.socialMarian de Charetty seems like a boss lady
@bokemonpie.bsky.social'First the creak, the groan, the thud of the windmills. Then the long portal-arches into the city which trapped the jingle and clatter of stamping horses and the squeak and thunder of cartwheels and the din of country voices.'
soundscapes we lost #DorothyDunnett
@bokemonpie.bsky.socialWhat I like about both Lymond and Claes is how #DorothyDunnett establishes that these are the types of men women find *worth* sleeping with. This spec detail also affects how the reader builds the characters in their head.
@bokemonpie.bsky.socialclaes smiles so much i am much more scared of him than I am of lymond
@bokemonpie.bsky.socialBarely on chapter 2 but the charge Dunnett loaded is Claes smiled at Mabelie and mentioned he has a bewitching smile so I guess they'll have a romp soon eh? Easy way for DD to tell us Claes is attractive and magnetic.
@bokemonpie.bsky.socialMy guess is that Claes is very beautiful but people don't remember his face because they can tell he no one important, just a cute serving boy. Just finished ch1 of HoN (yes yes I know I still need to finish CM of LC)
@sandi13.bsky.socialBooks by Dorothy Dunnett, especially her King Hereafter, about Macbeth and 11C Europe. Wonderful, lyrical writing backed by a lot of research. Should be much more widely known. She has been likened to the author’s equivalent of The Velvet Underground. #DorothyDunnett #dunnettcontent
@sandi13.bsky.social@bokemonpie.bsky.socialOk just to prepare myself, I purchased a used set of House of Niccolo books. It will come in the mail within the next few days.
@bokemonpie.bsky.socialso glad #DorothyDunnett taught me I don;t dislike fiction. I dislike fiction that is incoherent and doesn't answer questions i have later on, and the text and just expects me to hold incongruent premises in my head, which I find intolerable.
