Colour photo. The marble surround an concrete porch of a building in Athens. It’s hard for me to guess the date. No later than the 1960s and possibly as early as the 1930s, the deeply recessed glass door has a vaguely art deco pattern. In the centre, stylised leaves or feathers, triangles rising symmetrically out of a pair of squared off spirals. This is surrounded by bordering lines. At the bottom, a number 36 worked into the door. Slightly to the left and above, tucked into the glass, a blue and white 36 sign, as though perhaps the first was often ignored.

photo of a door in central Athens. The white painted metal grillwork is of diamonds with curlicue ornamented points radiating out from little circles, forming something like a four petal flower. on the left hand side a row of these backed with glass and darkness, on the right, a white panel backs then. The negative space between two flowers is a metal panel with a brass keyhole in it, patched with metal. It’s all black and white, bar the keyhole.

Here’s an early 20th century curlicue pattern styled with a classic unadorned slab of mid century modern wood.

Glass door in Kypseli, colour photo. I think the apartment building door must have been designed with juts plate glass and wood, then someone added panels of vertical lines and back-to-back paired curlicues for extra security. A glimpse of marble hallway with variegated ficus benjamins through the glass. The building across the way reflected in the surface.

colour photo pf a glass and metal door in Athens. The outer frame and key panel, seen here on the left, painted greyish green. the remaining metal painted cream. There’s also a brass handle vertical, next to the square panel with the keyhole. The lower part of the door has a solid metal panel behind the arcing lines of the pattern, like stylised hillsides or giant scales. above, dark glass backs the arcs. there’s a little bit more of the lower part pictured.
