What Diyu and his demons are like in *The Gray Show* (comic on hiatus).

In *The Gray Show*, the entrance to Diyu is the Great Wall—or rather, a version of that wall serving as a portal to hell—and the flames of hell take the form of fireworks. The most common creatures in this hell are dragons and other animals from Chinese fauna, albeit with a demonic appearance; the demons themselves are humanoid or anthropomorphic—predominantly humanoid with animal traits—and wear Chinese-style clothing that blends Gothic and demonic elements with stylized designs. They utilize the pentagram symbol, adapted to their own culture. Their hell is based on various eras of Chinese history, particularly antiquity, and draws inspiration from traditional depictions of Diyu. Among the most frequent demonic forms are monkeys—a reference to Sun Wukong from *Journey to the West*—as well as figures from other Chinese stories and legends. Their standard weapons are Chinese swords and spears, while the monkeys wield staffs. Female demons are based on various reinterpretations and designs of Mulan; straight hair is their most prominent shared trait. The fire appears as fireworks because that is one of the things people most readily associate with China. Although red is the dominant color of this hell, the palette varies to suit the aesthetic or to provide contrast and symbolism. They have their own version of Cerberus: a gigantic, monstrous, three-headed panda—chosen as an iconic Chinese animal—that serves as King Yan's pet. Finally, the facial markings on the demons are inspired by the masks and makeup of Chinese theater.
