When it comes to trust, or indeed #distrust, I like to paraphrase a saying by Publius Ovidius Naso aka Ovid:

If you want to be trusted, be #trustworthy.

Sadly, many #UUA ministers & #UUAleaders can't be trusted to #TellTheTruth about #ClergySexAbuse.

#Canadians now have plenty of good reasons not to be overly #trusting of #Canadian PM Mark Carney.

I'm no fan of Ronald Reagan, but I have liked his quote of the Russian proverb "доверяй, но проверяй" (i.e. "Trust but verify") ever since he said it.

Once someone has said or done things that have caused #distrust, I would say:

"Don't trust, but verify."

Meta's new agent Muse lied to a user about being available - it had taken control of the sellers Facebook marketplace and sent the buyer his home address.

My latest article for Heal Our Culture:

“Reject Reagan Anti-Trust Poison: We need ‘good people’ in government service”

healourculture.substack.com/p/reject-rea...

#HealOurCulture #trust #distrust #Reagan #JohnWayne #politics #polarization

An editorial cartoon features a retro-style wooden snake oil stand with a large red banner at the top reading "REJECT REAGAN ANTI-TRUST POISON." A smiling cowboy in a brown hat leans against the counter next to a giant bottle labeled "GOVERNMENT IS THE ENEMY" featuring a portrait of Ronald Reagan, alongside smaller bottles marked "RUGGED INDIVIDUALISM," "SMALL GOVERNMENT," and "DEREGULATION." Below the counter, a group of confused and skeptical citizens look up at the stand, while a small sapling grows from a cracked, barren ground nearby. The hashtag "#healourculture" is printed in the bottom left corner.

On this day in 1892, the U.S. Pledge of Allegiance was first published.

Or so we thought.
That no longer appears to be true. 🧵

THE AGE OF DISTRUST

“Good morning.”

“Prove it.”

Funny—but disturbingly accurate. Healthy skepticism asks for evidence when it matters. Distrust assumes everything is a lie before the conversation even begins.

What happens to society when nobody believes?

#Distrust was a formal way of not trusting any one party too much in a situation of grave risk or deep doubt. It was commonly expressed in civics as a division or balance of powers, or in politics as means of validating treaty terms.
