CRYPTOZOOLOGY
PHENOMFLOROLOGY
COMPENDIUM
VOLUME I.
Laurent DuPont 1IIFOREWARD
The following is a collection of drawings and observations from the late
Laurent DuPont x.
For the unaware, DuPont was a controversial figure in Natural Science during the 18th century. His rigorous work in botany and zoology was matched only by his obsession with the supernatural. DuPont focused on indigenous and Maroon folklore which he, using his vast knowledge of natural classification, would explain and demystify. While his emperical rigor was undeniable, he was ostracized by his peers for what was perceived as madness. DuPont's reputation was not helped by the fact that he was mixed raced, descended from Enslaved Africans on his mother's side. He saw his linage as a boon, his mixed ancestry granting him sensitivity to the "deeper truths of the natural world".
Laurent DuPont was extremely Prolific despite his age. He has several comprehensive essays, which some scholars say contribute to
revolutionary strides in furthering zoological theory. Yet, he has published only one book: Cryptozoology Phenomflorology Compendium.
This work, which focuses on the natural and
supernatural environments or the The New World (specifically the southeast), was the knife that plunged his Naturalist career to ruin. He was stripped of his credentials and labeled a raving sensationalist. His humiliation came to a head when he reportedly burned several of his peers works in an abandoned house near the Great Dismal Swamp of Chesapeake. Reportedly, as authorities attempted to apprehend DuPont, he and the flaming building were violently swept away as a sudden sinkhole swallowed them both.
While a few dedicated historians have recovered pieces of his manuscript drafts, there are no known complete copies of his compendium. This collection contains the few pages recovered from the late DuPont's dwelling. The few published copies were presumably burned with him.
