The work turns to an ambient drone composition to sit with questions of time, technology and human progress. The drone loops without resolution, a sound that never arrives, only continues, echoing the way technological change rarely pauses for reflection. Alongside it, formless shapes drift and dissolve in time with the tone, unpredictable in a way the drone itself is not. Between the two sits a tension: steady advance against uncertain consequence. Five Co-Pilots is distributed on VHS, a format chosen for its own relationship to time and decay. Where the drone loops without end, the tape itself is finite: each playback wears the magnetic surface a little further, colour drifting, edges softening, until the image sits closer to noise than picture. The work’s meditation on technological progression is mirrored in its own medium’s obsolescence, a format once at the edge of innovation, now a relic that degrades with use. To watch Five Co-Pilots on VHS is to watch the past ageing in real time, a fitting companion to a composition asking what becomes of the future we build.
