The 3 stages of the antihero vigilante, in 3 movies:
#DeathWish: He catches random people off guard, and kills them.
#DeathWish2: He randomly runs into the specific people he already wanted to kill, then kills them.
#DeathWish3: He becomes an unkillable trigger-happy superhero - like #ThePunisher. Ⓐ

Yeah, I poked a lot of fun at #DeathWish3. But I’ve been a #GavanOHerlihy fan since my college years - after seeing reruns of #Tarzan (an unintentionally hilarious TV show). Sadly, when I ORIGINALLY saw that show in the early 1990s, I wanted to be #Tarzan - not THE AWESOME villain #CordellWinslow. Ⓐ

And #DeathWish3 ends with the romantic gaze between the (male) antihero vigilante and the one NYPD (male) cop who figured out who he was. Well, the antihero vigilante certainly didn’t look at his (female) love interest that lovingly. Ⓐ

The question that begs to be asked in #DeathWish3 - what took “the gang” so long to FULLY commit to killing the antihero vigilante (after they KNEW he killed some of their members)? By the time “the gang” gets its act together - it’s too late (and “the gang” gets mowed down by machine gun fire). Ⓐ

Also, in #DeathWish3, the antihero vigilante is more affectionate toward the male senior citizen neighbour of his dead male friend, than he was toward his young female love interest lawyer. Clearly, the antihero vigilante values the lives of old men more than young women. Ⓐ

It would be inappropriate (in the movie #DeathWish3) to describe the love interest of the antihero vigilante as his “girlfriend” - since they had BASICALLY just met, before she was killed. And HE is hilariously indifferent to her demise - all HE cares about is wiping out “the gang”. Ⓐ

In #DeathWish3, after the antihero vigilante fucks his love interest, I thought “When will she be raped and killed?” But this film is more tame than its predecessors. So as she waits in a car, a villain knocks her out, and pushes the car down a hill into traffic - then the car EXPLODES on impact. Ⓐ

Later in the film #DeathWish3, the antihero vigilante FINALLY fucks his love interest (aka lawyer) - who is completely unreasonably head over heels for him. A little earlier in the film, she even said she “knows nothing” about him. So she’s turned on by evasive senior citizen men. Got it. Ⓐ

Something I did not expect to see in the movie #DeathWish3 - a two-four of #Moosehead beer. Perhaps Canadian beers had (decades ago) penetrated deeper into the American market than I ever realized… Ⓐ

Sample dialogue in the movie #DeathWish3:
[A FEW MINUTES AFTER THE ANTIHERO VIGILANTE ARRIVES AT THE LOVE INTEREST’S APARTMENT FOR THEIR DATE]
#AntiheroVigilante: “Oh, it’s late. I gotta go.”
[AND OFF HE GOES] Ⓐ

Of course, #DeathWish3 features a rape scene (though one way less graphic than in the previous films). So a dude’s wife gets raped, and he hears she’s at the hospital being treated for rape and a broken arm. The husband arrives at the hospital - and the doctor tells him his wife’s DEAD. No joke. Ⓐ

@contraryterry.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 9:45 AM

Well, SURPRISE SURPRISE, the love interest in #DeathWish3 is a lawyer - more specifically a public defender. And OF COURSE she regards her clients as “creeps” - which is music to the ears of the antihero vigilante. And it’s also clear her unsympathetic views represent the stance of the filmmakers. Ⓐ

@contraryterry.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 9:43 AM

#DeathWish3 is less racist than the earlier films - which isn’t saying much. But it features an elderly Jewish couple who are too poor to move away from their extremely dangerous neighbourhood. So the film made an honest attempt to show the old stereotype about “ALL Jews being rich” - isn’t true. Ⓐ

@contraryterry.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 9:35 AM

Sample dialogue in the movie #DeathWish3:
#AntiheroVigilante: “A friend of mine was killed - I’m trying to find out what happened.”
#LoveInterest: “Why? There’s nothing you can do.”
#AntiheroVigilante: “Oh, I’ll put it in a book I’m writing.”
#Terry: “Uh… are ALL hot women impressed by writers?” Ⓐ

@contraryterry.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 9:32 AM

#DeborahRaffin AND #MarinaSirtis were in #DeathWish3! Oh, HAPPY DAY. Unfortunately for Ms Raffin, she was given the thankless task of portraying the love interest of the antihero vigilante - and SHE asks out HIM? Unbelievable… Ⓐ

@contraryterry.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 9:29 AM

Also in #DeathWish3, we see the NYPD turn to the antihero vigilante to solve the problem of violent crime in one violent part of #NewYorkCity. This is because that one NYPD cop senses that this senior citizen architect (and serial killer) has SOMEHOW become the most dangerous man in America. Okay… Ⓐ

@contraryterry.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 9:27 AM

For #DeathWish3, the antihero vigilante is (initially) trying to keep a low profile - because he’s been in serial killer mode in numerous cities across the USA. It’s clear ONE NYPD cop knows everything the antihero vigilante has been up to - but it SEEMS he’s the only cop in America that knows. Ⓐ

@contraryterry.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 9:24 AM

So as soon as #DeathWish3 begins, we see that the film has already forgotten that the antihero vigilante is one of the most successful architects in America - because we see him inexplicably taking THE BUS back to #NewYorkCity. No first class airplane tickets for this humble serial killer! Ⓐ

Saw #DeathWish3 - another #DeathWish film that once again has music provided by #JimmyPage. Well, now I know what Jim was doing after #LedZeppelin broke up - making unimpressive soundtracks for bad action movies. Congrats, Jim. Ⓐ
