Toni Morrison's 'Beloved' remains one of the most challenged books in America, yet its exploration of ancestral grief & historical trauma is unmatched.
Grief isn't just individual. It lingers and moves through generations. 🧵 1/2

Grief isn't always quiet—sometimes sudden trauma demands a movement.
Angie Thomas' 'The Hate U Give' centers on the sudden loss of a Black teenager & how a community mourns through collective trauma. 🧵 1/2

Banned book highlight: "Tuck Everlasting" by Natalie Babbitt. 🌿

Often challenged for themes of death, this classic reflects a core truth of doula care: mortality gives life meaning, and death is a natural cycle—not something to fear or censor.

Front cover of Tuck Everlasting: The Graphic Novel. The top text reads "NATALIE BABBITT'S TUCK EVERLASTING" in dark serif font, with "THE GRAPHIC NOVEL" centered beneath it. The watercolor illustration displays a warm sunset sky with a low sun over a lake. Tall pine trees frame the scene, with a cozy log cabin showing glowing yellow windows on the right bank. In the distance, two figures sit in a small blue rowboat on the water. The bottom text reads "ADAPTED AND ILLUSTRATED BY K. WOODMAN-MAYNARD".Front cover of the novel Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt. The author's name is printed in large brown text across the top, above the book title in outlined serif letters. On the left is a circular emblem reading "CELEBRATING 50 YEARS - FOREWORD by Gabrielle Zevin". The lower half features a sepia-toned watercolor scene of a small red cabin surrounded by pine trees on the shore of a lake, with two dark silhouette figures in a rowboat on the water reflecting the red house.

Music has a way of holding our deepest memories and values. 🎶

Comment below with one song that must be on your life's final playlist.

I’ll start with a banger that I’d love to take my last breaths to: open.spotify.com/track/5kguTo...

In the dark background, a shadowy figure wearing a top hat is framed against a star-filled night sky.

As a #DeathDoula, I hold space for losses that society tries to ignore. Grief doesn't disappear just because it makes others uncomfortable. We honor the living and the dead by refusing to censor grief.

If this (or any other) book has helped you navigate an unacknowledged loss, let me know

It also allows us to plan with intention, cherish chosen family, and live fully right now.

As death doulas, our priority is to ensure that each dying person's story and identity are fully witnessed. 🤍 2/2

Post 2/3 I remember that I had just turned 9 when my grandfather bought it for me on a visit to a small, local bookstore. Reading it moved me in a way I hadn't yet learned a book could, or that I even had words for at the time

Not big on selfies (#GenX lol) but with a birthday on the horizon, why not? Working with mortality teaches you to wear bright colors, celebrate getting older, & savor being right here, right now. Grateful for another trip around the sun! ☀️

No law requires the phone call before the hand is ready to let go. A death doula holds that pause open long enough for a family to use it. #DeathDoula #EndOfLifeCare #GriefSupport

Currently reading Briefly, Perfectly Human by Alua Arthur, and the quote deeply resonated with me. It captures the heartbeat of why I want to do this work: everyone deserves to be truly seen and valued, especially as they approach the end of life. 🤍

A square text graphic on a warm gold to dark brown gradient background. Framed by thin borders and large quotation marks, white text reads: "You are seen. You are heard. Your life matters. Your death will too." Below the quote, smaller text reads: "Alua Arthur, Briefly, Perfectly Human".

Common question: Do I need a doula if I already have hospice?

Hospice provides essential medical, nursing, and clinical care. Doulas offer non-medical emotional, practical, and holistic support—working alongside hospice to keep your wishes centered. 🤍

Post 2/2 They may feel ashamed for grieving, or even gaslit into thinking they “shouldn't be so upset”. So let’s just agree: grief doesn't require social permission to exist. The absence of someone else's approval doesn't make the loss less devastating to experience.
