Matching STATS19 collision data to a road network: feasibility www.gov.uk/government/s... report from DfT's statistics team

Road Safety Data www.gov.uk/government/s...

DfT's collision data is open … but OS NGD RoadLink isn't

#roadsafety #transportdata #opendata #datapolicy

OS NGD RoadLink was selected for the feasibility study because DfT can access it through the Public Sector Geospatial Agreement, it provides detailed national road geometry and attributes, and it is related to the mapping used in the CRASH system used by many police forces to provide STATS19 data to DfT. In future, the road safety statistics team will agree the appropriate network product and version with the DfT roads geography team, taking account of the networks already used across road statistics, update timing, historic consistency and production support.

Because OS NGD is not an open dataset, the Department will confirm with OS which derived attributes, identifiers and aggregate outputs, if any, could be published or shared under licence. This will be explored further as the work progresses.

'We can see into the other room': insurers face surge in subsidence claims www.theguardian.com/business/202...

Reminder that the BGS, a public body, has detailed mapping of property subsidence risk but it's only available for £ www.bgs.ac.uk/datasets/geo...

#geospatial #datapolicy not- #opendata

Millions of homes are at risk of subsidence because of the worsening climate crisis, the British Geological Survey has warned. Under its worst-case scenario, 11% of UK homes could be at risk of subsidence by 2070, more than 4.2 million houses.

As hotter, drier summers and warmer, wetter winters become more frequent, the ground under houses can shrink and drag down a property’s foundations. Older properties with shallow foundations are more at risk, and those built on clay-rich soils. The most vulnerable areas include London, Essex, Kent and a tranche of land from Oxford up to the Wash on England’s east coast, according to scientists.

My response (as Datadaptive) to the questions in the UK Government's call for evidence on making it even easier for public bodies to charge for re-use of public sector data www.owenboswarva.com/blog/post-od...

The call for evidence closes today www.gov.uk/government/c...

#datapolicy #FOI #opendata

There is no way to reconcile the stated objective of making all public sector data "affordable and easy to re‑use" with the plan to increase charging above marginal cost, and indeed the existing widespread practice of charging for high-value datasets is the main barrier to maximising the potential for re-use of public sector data. Charging for re-use and associated terms and restrictions inevitably introduce burdens and friction in the re-use of public sector data, and charging entirely prevents re-use for many use cases – particularly where businesses want to share data directly with customers or combine public data with their own data on the web.

Paywalling (more) public sector data is a bad idea, actually www.owenboswarva.com/blog/post-od...

New post. The marginal cost limit in the UK's RPSI regulations does not mandate #opendata – but does provide a convenient excuse for underfunding of public data infrastructure
