A Dark-eyed Junco in the shade of the fall foliage of a maple tree.

At UBC, Vancouver, BC, Canada.

Photo: A Dark-eyed Junco is in profile facing picture left while perched on a thin branch of a maple tree and completely shaded by the leaves. The branch, rising in a bent vertical line, covers part of the bird effectively splitting it in half. The maple leaves have all changed color and are mostly orange with tinges of red here and there and yellow where the sunlight hits them.

It’s only a matter of time until the Dark-Eyed Juncos visit us again! I must ready the bird feeders.

We are in that awkward fall lull where summer birds have flown south, but the Dark-eyed Juncos haven't arrived yet. The yard would be quiet if the blue jays weren't outside screaming all morning. Still waiting for the winter crew to settle in! πŸ‚πŸ¦

A Dark-eyed Junco is shown in profile perched on a bare, snow-dusted branch beside a hanging round seed ornament. The small sparrow-sized bird features a slate-gray head and back, a clean white belly, and a pale pink beak open slightly as it feeds against a winter background.

Dutchess NY, outside my driveway during the rain on Sunday 9/20/2026: My first Dark-eyed Junco for this Fall migration, but this one looks much darker than the ones I had seen before. Slate-colored perhaps? #darkeyedjunco #juncos #birds #birdwatching #wildlife #fallmigration2026

TFW when you're trying to eat your lunch in a crowded food court while someone hovers waiting for your table. Juncos are usually ground feeders cleaning up crumbs below, but thise one chose to loom directly over the Tufted Titmouse. Zero feeder etiquette. πŸ¦πŸ‘€

A Tufted Titmouse perches on a decorated, snow-dusted seed wreath in the foreground, holding a seed in its bill. Blurred in the background above, a Dark-eyed Junco sits on a black metal hanger pole, looking down toward the feeding titmouse against a snowy winter backdrop.

While warblers flee to the tropics, Dark-eyed Juncos spend summers in Canadian boreal forests and view our freezing backyards as prime winter vacation spots. Looking forward to welcoming the original snowbirds back to the feeders! β„οΈπŸ¦

A Dark-eyed Junco perches on a snow-dusted bare branch in winter, positioned beside a hanging spherical seed ornament decorated with a touch of green moss. The small songbird features a dark charcoal-gray head and back, a bright white belly, and a pale pink bill with a bit of seed at the tip.
