The Yup’ik people (plural Yupiit) are a group of Indigenous peoples native to western, southwestern, and south-central Alaska, as well as parts of the Russian Far East. Derived from the words yuk ("person") and pik ("real"), the name translates to the "real people". They form the largest single Alaska Native group. A traditional Yup'ik carved wooden dance or shaman's mask from Southwestern Alaska, featuring characteristic attached limb-like appendages and dual-pigment coloring. Often incorporates symbolic appendages (such as arms, legs, or feathers) representing spirits (Yua) or transformation narratives in ceremonial dances. Traditionally carved from local woods like spruce or cottonwood and finished with natural pigments.
