#ArtSky #Dalí #NuclearMysticism

"The Ascension of Christ" (also known as Pietà), painted by Salvador Dalí in 1958.

About the Painting

• Artist: Salvador Dalí
• Year: 1958
• Medium: Oil on canvas
• Style: Nuclear Mysticism, which mixed Catholic themes with modern science.

Key Visual Elements

• Perspective: Christ is shown floating upward, viewed from a striking angle beneath his feet.
• Background: A luminous sphere and a dramatic, fiery sky frame the central figure.

Key Themes & Symbolism

• The Cosmic Dream: Dalí stated that the painting was inspired by a vivid "cosmic dream" he had in 1950. In this dream, he envisioned the nucleus of an atom, which he later integrated into the background of this piece to represent the true unifying force of Christ.
• Unique Perspective: Unlike traditional ascensions depicted by Old Masters, Dalí portrays Christ from a dramatic foreshortened angle below, focusing heavily on his feet pointing toward the viewer. His outstretched arms and body form a classic triangular geometric structure.
• Gala as the Witness: Looking down upon the ascending figure from above is a female face weeping, modeled after Dalí’s wife and muse, Gala Dalí.

"The Ship" (1943)
Gouache painted over a chromolithograph
25 in × 18 in (63.5 cm × 45.7 cm)
The Dalí Museum, St. Petersburg, Florida
#ArtSky #Dalí

"The Ship" created by the surrealist artist Salvador Dalí around 1942–1943.

Artwork Details

• Artist: Salvador Dalí
• Date: c. 1942–1943
• Medium: Gouache painted over a chromolithograph (a type of color print) by British marine painter Montague Dawson, specifically transforming Dawson's work Wind & Sun... The Lightning.
• Location: Part of the permanent collection at The Dalí Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Key Details about the Artwork

• The Illusion: This piece is a classic double-image or optical illusion typical of Dalí's work. From a distance, the shape of the woman with outstretched arms and her billowing dress transforms into the majestic sails and hull of a multi-masted sailing ship navigating turbulent ocean waters.
• Alternative Context: It is also closely associated with his set and costume designs, frequently identified as a concept or Costume for "Tristan Insane" (Tristan Fou), a ballet for which Dalí created the libretto, costumes, and sets in the early 1940s.
• Medium & Inspiration: The work was created using gouache and watercolor layered over a chromolithograph. Dalí based this transformation on a classic maritime print by the British marine artist Montague Dawson.

Salvador Dalí
"Family of Marsupial Centaurs" (1940)
oil on canvas | 35.6 x 31 cm (14 x 12.2 in).
Private Collection
#ArtSky #Dalí

"Family of Marsupial Centaurs" (1940) by the Spanish surrealist artist Salvador Dalí.

Key Details

• Medium: Oil on canvas.
• Style: Classical-leaning surrealism.
• Inspiration: Dalí linked the work to psychoanalyst Otto Rank’s theories on birth trauma, reflecting his own lifelong fascination with pre-birth memories.

Art Historical Context

During this time, Dalí moved away from the chaotic and pure automatism of early Surrealism toward what he described as a return to a Classical style. In this painting, he merges traditional mythological motifs (the centaur) with Renaissance-like anatomical precision, dynamic motion, and balanced composition.

Meaning and Psychoanalytic Influence

Dalí dedicated this piece to Dr. Otto Rank, a prominent psychoanalyst who theorized that human neurosis originates from birth trauma. Dalí claimed to possess vivid "intrauterine memories"—recollections of his time inside the womb before being born.
The Marsupial Metaphor: To visually represent this concept, Dalí transformed the centaurs into "marsupials" by painting hollow, womb-like openings directly into their torsos and bodies.
The Imagery: Inside these protective cavities, you can see human infants being sheltered and emerging, symbolizing the safety of the womb and the dramatic transition of birth.

Private Collection (Switzerland)
#ArtSky #Dalí

This rare Salvador Dali work recently unveiled in Montreal measures 8 metres by 15 metres. The piece was created in New York in the 1940s for a Metropolitan Opera ballet based on the tale of Tristan and Isolde. According to CBC Radio-Canada, the work disappeared from public view following the close of that production in 1949. A related release stated it was restored in Switzerland in 2009.

Recently, an anonymous European collector offered the work to Daniele Finzi Pasca, a Swiss director and choreographer who has worked on productions for Cirque du Soleil and Cirque Éloize, as well as the closing ceremonies of the Turin Olympics.

Key Details

• Artist: Salvador Dalí
• Year: 1944
• Medium: Painted canvas
• Original Purpose: Created as a massive stage backdrop for the ballet Mad Tristan at New York's Metropolitan Opera.

Distinctive Features

• The Figures: One figure features a head made of a fluffy dandelion, while the other has a wheelbarrow sprouting from its back like wings.
• The Landscape: The dreamlike, barren setting includes Dalí's signature red crutches standing in the sand.

The Backdrop's Journey

• Rediscovery (2009): After touring the world through the 1940s and 1950s, the massive 30-by-50-foot canvas spent decades forgotten. It was finally rediscovered in 2009 inside the prop storage archives of New York's Metropolitan Opera.

"The Lugubrious Game" (1929)
Oil and collage on cardboard | 44.4 × 30.3 cm (17.5 × 11.9 in).
Private Collection
#ArtSky #Dalí

"The Lugubrious Game" (also known as The Mournful Game or Dismal Sport), a seminal early masterpiece painted by the Spanish Surrealist artist Salvador Dalí in 1929.
Key Details & Significance
Format: It is an oil paint and collage composition executed on cardboard, measuring roughly 44.4 cm × 30.3 cm.
The Surrealist Entry: Dalí created this painting while living in Cadaqués during the summer of 1929. When prominent Surrealists like poet Paul Éluard (who actually suggested the artwork's title) and Gala visited his home and saw it, they were profoundly transfixed. This piece directly solidified Dalí's formal entry into the official Surrealist movement.

Symbolism & Imagery: The piece heavily utilizes Dalí's "paranoiac-critical method," plundering his subconscious for raw psychological anxieties. It visually maps out deeply personal Freudian complexes regarding castration fears, childhood memories, and sexual desires. Notable details include a classical statue with a disproportionately massive hand, a monument inscribed with weight increments (Gramme, Centigramme, Milligramme), a grasshopper masking a profile of Dalí's own face, and heavily controversial scatological elements that initially startled other Surrealist contemporaries

Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid
#ArtSky #Dalí

"Autorretrato Cubista" (Cubist Self-Portrait), painted by the Spanish artist Salvador Dalí in 1923.
Key Details About the Artwork
Artist: Salvador Dalí
Movement: Cubism (specifically drawing from the influence of Analytical Cubism and L'Esprit Nouveau)
Medium: Oil and collage on paperboard glued to wood
Current Location: It is housed in the permanent collection of the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid, Spain

Artistic Context
Created while Dalí was a student in Madrid, this painting captures a brief period before he became a defining figure of Surrealism. In the piece, his face is reduced to a stylized, mask-like shape heavily inspired by African aesthetics and fractured into abstract, geometric shards. Interwoven within the shards are collaged newspaper clippings and everyday objects, typical of the Cubist exploration of multiple perspectives and textures
