Jackie Chan is too old to play Short Round these days, but this could have been a huge movie franchise back in the 90s.

Jules Verne’s 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea was the first science-fiction story I ever read. It led to a life-long love of the oceans and the denizens of the deeps. The character of Captain Nemo in particular fascinated me, and he remains one of my favorite anti-hero antagonists.
Like many who entered the gaming hobby in the 70s, I’ve played my fair share of chit-and-map wargames. FASA’s BattleTech: The Succession Wars (1987) combined the groovy sci-fi mecha setting with classic strategic wargame gameplay. It was a fun “Big Picture” way to enjoy BattleTech!
On this day in 1980, the greatest sci-fi post-apocalyptic sword and sorcery cartoon ever created first aired. Happy birthday to Thundarr the Barbarian!
Video game box art from the 80s was so freaking awesome. Here’s the cover art for the #atari 2600 version of Asteroids. Art by Chris Kenyon.
Happy birthday to Charlie Brown, who first appeared on this day in 1950 in the very first Peanuts newspaper strip.
On this day in 1987, Star Trek: The Next Generation premiered on syndicated TV with the pilot episode “Encounter at Farpoint”. The show would go on to become wildly successful, running for seven seasons and airing 178 episodes and four theatrical movies.
Today is the birthday of actor @markhamillofficial.bsky.social, best known for his portrayal of Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars films. Love him or hate him, Luke is the heart and soul of Star Wars, and Hamill did an amazing job bringing that character to life. Happy birthday, Mark!
Ray Harryhausen was a hero of mine when I was a kid. I watched all of his classic adventure films, and even made my own stop-motion films with my dad’s Super 8 camera.
Watch Adam Savage as he takes a look at one of the last Mighty Joe Young filming models.
Happy Hobbit Day! Here is a pic of all of the versions of the #Hobbit I currently own: the edition I first read in the 70s, the illustrated edition that I read to my son, the storybook and record that Lee listens to (and that I listened to as a kid), and the animated movie.
On this day in 1979, Buck Rogers in the 25th Century premiered on NBC. The pilot debuted in theaters the prior summer, and I was excited to see it continue as a TV series. I always wondered why my dad was so eager to watch it with me, though. Must’ve been the funny robot… 🤔
Arrr, matey, today be Talk Like a Pirate Day, so here be some pirate art by that swabby Don Maitz!
On this day in 1964, Jonny Quest premiered in prime time on ABC. The show was created by cartoonist and comicbook artist Doug Wildey and produced by Hana-Barbera Productions. It featured young Jonny, his friend Hadji, Dr. Benton Quest, and stone-cold operator Race Bannon.
Battlestar Galactica first aired on this date in 1978. Following shortly after Star Wars mania swept through the nation, high expectations were set for the series. Despite positive ratings, the show proved too costly, and it was cancelled after just one season. I loved it as a kid!
Today is the birthday of actor Clayton Moore. Others portrayed the Lone Ranger before him, and others after, but Moore will always be *the* Lone Ranger.
Happy birthday to Mike Grell, creator of the Warlord, DC’s answer to the success of Marvel’s popular Conan the Barbarian. While the Warlord never achieved the same success as Conan, he still did alright for himself.
Today is the anniversary of the birth of Walter Gibson, more famously known as Maxwell Grant, creator and primary writer for the iconic pulp character, the Shadow.
On this day in 1977, the Atari 2600 VCS first hit the shelves. I spent many, many hours playing mine. 😁
What were favorite Atari games?
In honor of the NFL season opener: NFL SuperPro debuted in 1991. It’s widely considered one of the worst ever published, and it was cut mercifully short after just 12 issues. Writer Fabian Nicieza has claimed he wrote the series only for the free SuperBowl tix.

Star Trek first aired on this date in 1966. It was cancelled before I was born, but I would watch it in syndication as a kid a few years later. My love of sci-Fi started with this show. Live long, and prosper. 🖖🏻
