This engraving shows the Virgin and Child seated on a turf bench in an enclosed garden, beneath a tree. Dürer's AD monogram and the date 1513 are inscribed at top centre. The Virgin, who is dressed in sixteenth-century costume, holds the Christ Child to her cheek, while he gazes out at the viewer. In the background beyond the garden can be see a stretch of water and distant hills. This is one of a number of prints and drawings in which Dürer presents the Virgin and Child in a hortus conclusus or enclosed garden, an image used to symbolise the Mother of God in the Song of Songs. This engraving inspired the prints of the same theme by Jan Gossart and his contemporaries, Lucas van Leyden, Frans Crabbe, Nicolas Hogenberg, and Dirck Vellert.
