Birthday parties are a thing he struggles with…

Curly’s birthday was a couple of days ago, and as promised, I made some art 🙌
I feel like he definitely has trauma around birthdays now, given everything that happened :(

Curly (center) and Jimmy (left) from Mouthwashing. Curly is seated at a table and is wearing a purple party hat and a light blue polo shirt, and is looking up at Jimmy with a mildly confused but mostly amused smile. Jimmy is standing next to him and is wearing a gray long sleeve shirt. His face is blocked by a black square, representing the dead pixel (and perhaps representing Curly trying to block him out of this memory). Jimmy has one hand on Curly’s shoulder and is passing him a slice of cake with the other hand. Jimmy says, “we may or may not have swapped some of the sugar with protein powder.” Curly says, “ha, this will be interesting…” This is in reference to the Q&A where Wrong Organ said one of Curly’s fondest birthday memories was when his friends improvised a cake recipe and used protein powder because he didn’t like sweets. The cake in question is yellow cake with chocolate frosting and caramel on top and in the middle, and it looks weird and lumpy. The picture has a dark ambiance with warm yellow lighting, implying that they’re somewhere nice, like a bar or restaurant.

Curly, in the center of the frame, looking down at a cake, during the birthday party scene in Mouthwashing. He’s wearing a yellow and red striped party hat and has an anxious and distressed expression, with furrowed eyebrows and a few drops of sweat on his face. The cake in front of him has 3 layers, is beige with pink frosting, and has whipped cream on the top and circled around the base with a few candles sticking out. The background behind him is blurry but kitchen cabinets and rainbow streamers are visible behind him. To the left, there is a speech bubble coming from off-screen, implied to be Jimmy because it’s his canon dialogue from the game. He says, “let’s have some fucking cake, hmm?” The text is slanted and the speech bubble has squiggly points at the bottom, to indicate that Jimmy’s voice is dripping with an icy anger.

Warning for disturbing content that is canon from Mouthwashing. Curly, visible from the chest and upward, in his injured, post-crash state. This is right after Jimmy cut off his leg and force-fed it to him. He is laying on the kitchen table in the ship, with a distraught, pained, and terrified expression. Tears pour from his eye and are forming a puddle next to his face, and his teeth are gritted and have blood in them. He’s looking up at Jimmy, who is mostly off-screen but we can see his hands, which are covered in blood. Jimmy uses one hand to place a yellow-and-red striped party hat on Curly’s head, and the other hand to put the hat string under Curly’s chin. This is the same hat from the previous picture. There is a knife to the left of Curly’s head and a plate to the right, both of which are also smeared with blood. The knife also has chunks of flesh on it. More blood is visible on Curly’s bandages and medical gown, the table underneath him, and on Jimmy’s sleeves. Jimmy says to Curly, “someday, you’ll thank me,” which reflects his in-game dialogue. The lighting is dim, red, and foreboding. Though it is not clear in this image, this is an AU where the rest of the crew survives, but they are currently unconscious so this scene still happened as it does in canon.

A little bit of context so the image description makes sense: as mentioned in the previous image description, this is an AU where the crew survives (except Jimmy). They have been rescued and brought back to Earth, and Curly received skin and hair grafts, and surgery to repair most of his injuries. He is now at a rehab unit in the hospital, and a friend he made there decided to throw him a small birthday party to lift his spirits, unknowing of his trauma around birthday settings. Image description starts here: Curly, centered in the frame, sitting at a table. He’s wearing a periwinkle blue shirt and a dark blue face-mask over his nose and mouth to cover the remnants of his injuries. Although only his eyes are visible, he is visibly distressed, with his eyebrows furrowed tightly and lots of sweat on his face. The pupil of his good eye is drawn as a squiggly circle to show he is internally panicking. He’s staring down at a slice of cake being handed to him by one of his medics, who is mostly off screen but you can see his arm coming from the right. He has a light skin tone, red arm hair, and freckles. The cake is yellow with vanilla frosting. His friend, who is also off screen except for her arm coming from the left, is handing him a teal party hat. She has a light brown skin tone and her nails are painted purple. They are singing happy birthday, but the words are very blurry, implying that the sound is muffled to Curly because he is starting to have a panic attack. There is a squiggly, shaky speech bubble coming from him with three dots, showing that he is silent and speechless.

AAAAAAAH IT’S CURLY’S BIRTHDAYYY

I’ve got art in the works but in case I finish it late tonight or tomorrow, I wanna make a birthday post about my favorite, tragically inclined, horrors-beyond-our-comprehension-experiencing Captain lol. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, CURLY!!! ❤️

Official ID art of Curly from Mouthwashing, cropped so it’s just him rather than the rest of the card. On top of the picture is a blue birthday hat that I doodled on top of his head, reading “B-day Boy.”
