I was lucky to visit the Sunken Forest on Fire Island with dendrologist Nikki Davi. A lovely example of #CrownShyness, where trees avoid touching each other, creating gaps in the canopy, allowing trees maximum access to sunlight. Holly, Sassafras,, Maple, Blackgum, Serviceberry 🌿
