The DIVEGFOOD system experiment under plastic shelter at the INRAE research station in Alénya under a Mediterranean climate. The experimental fields had previously been cropped with vegetables in organic farming for six years. The baseline poorly diversified system named REF was a lettuce-based cropping system (a); the moderately diversified system MODIV included alternatives to lettuce such as kohlrabi (b); a highly diversified system DIVBANDE was designed and managed with strip intercropping, e.g. with lamb’s lettuce, fennel and chards strips (c); and the highly diversified DIVMIX system tested mixed intercropping associating for example turnip, fennel and spinach (d).
