Fascinating findings coming from from @lucahahn.bsky.social et al, opening up exciting avenues for further research on social relationships in corvids. I’ll be following their progress closely.

Time to get the #Corvids on display for #ThursJay, so here's a set of Crows, Magpies, Jays, Jackdaws and a Rook to look at.

Happy #ThursJay! I'm not sure the harsh sounds this Steller's jay (Cyanocitta stelleri) was making could be considered singing, but it was certainly making itself heard! #BirdOfTheDay #Crooners #Birds #Corvids #Autumn #Photography #EastCoastKin

A Steller's jay perches on a branch with leaves changing color. It's a corvid with a deep blue lower body, wings, and tail and a charcoal-black upper body and head featuring a prominent crest. The eyes, beak, and feet are also black.

@robcrank68.bsky.social has given us #Crooners for #BirdoftheDay This crow is clearly in operatic mode, with appreciative pigeon listening carefully. #Crows #Corvids #Birds #Birdphotography

The Jays are coming into the garden everyday at the moment.
I see them overfly the cottage checking to see if the coast is clear - if they decide it is, they come right up to the window.

A moody monochrome shot looking up at a backlit railway crossing sign in front of heavy storm clouds. A jackdaw sits silhouetted at the very top of the X-shaped sign. Below it, a bilingual upside-down triangular sign reads in Welsh and English "ILDIWCH / GIVE WAY" and a square one underneath that reads "CADWCH Y GROESFAN YN GLIR / KEEP CROSSING CLEAR".

Good morning!
Rooks love walnuts but can't crack them. This clever fellow is heading to his favorite "nutcracker" - these #birds drop nuts onto the asphalt from a great height so that passing cars will crush them.

#Poland Gawron (Corvus frugilegus)

A close-up silhouette of a rook flying across a solid, vibrant blue sky. The black bird is captured in profile from the side, mid-flight, with its wings gracefully spread. In its long, sharp beak, it is holding a large, whole walnut. The distinctive bare, light-grey skin patch at the base of its bill is clearly visible, contrasting with its dark plumage.

Te z natury terytorialne #birds jesienią zmieniają swoje nawyki: łączą się w wielkie, zorganizowane głośne stada. Wspólnie szukają jedzenia i nocują, bo w grupie łatwiej wypatrzyć zagrożenie i przekąski.

Wrona siwa (Corvus cornix)
Dzień dobry!👋

A close-up of a hooded crow captured in mid-air against a vibrant blue sky. The bird has its wings spread wide, showcasing its black flight feathers and grey body plumage. Its head, throat, and tail are solid black, contrasting with the light grey belly and back. Below the flying crow, the topmost green leaves and thin branches of a birch tree are visible.

Synchroniczne patrolowanie okolicy. Prześwietlamy miejskie trawniki i sprawdzamy, czy nie zostały jakieś porzucone orzechy. Ktoś chętny na wspólny lot?

Gawron (Corvus frugilegus)

Two black rooks flying close together in synchrony against a clear blue sky. The birds are captured from the side in mid-flight, displaying their dark, glossy feathers with a subtle metallic sheen. Their long, grey bills and characteristic bare, light grey skin patches at the base of their beaks are clearly visible as they glide through the air.

The Corvid roosts are getting larger every evening here at the moment.
There are many restless fly pasts as the smaller groups coalesce.
Here's one of them from sunset yesterday. Rather a chill in the air. It felt like Winter's Eve.

Steller’s Jay has a “Where the heck’s the peanuts?” look…it flew off but was back seconds after I was done refilling all the feeders so obviously was keeping an eye on me…

Rook at sunset.
Surely the thoughts of this bird are worth more than a penny.
