#Conlangity Day 10

Given the weight Istemorians place on personal relationships, there are many terms that come of for relationships. We'll start with immediate family and work out.

Parents & children: The base words are farel (fair-ehl) & ky (kai), which work in and of themselves, especially if🧵

This one I already have for Kirrhin:

Ras-u'a-nu'kai means “found family,” and pei-ro'gai means “newly met.” They are used together as a common phrase, when introduced in Starflower, by a Sal:a'hu-E:Ru'din who recognises MC as an 🧵

Started yesterday, but migraine.😖 This is where my linguistic immaturity will shine.😂

I very actively avoided grammatical gender. There is an in-world rationale in that the Istemorians as a society embrace non-binary identities, including in their gods who gave them language,🧵

#Conlangity 10. In Kraslan, family is “rósayi”. A few members:

- Oma = mother
- Taya = father
- Neƥil = child
- Vaŋa = daughter
- Myn = son
- Néri = sister
- Matýa = aunt
- Cáro = niece

Diminutives are used a lot here, so you’ll often hear “omale” (“little mother/mommy”) 🧵

I will start with the first words i ever came up with for Sun-Drop
They are terms used in a vocative way, that is, they’ll only be used to call someone, and never in a way that’s like “this person is this to me”

#Conlangity Day 10

Time to make some vocab! Or share, if you've already got something!

The prompt today is "words about relationships." This can be family relationships, close friends, lovers, work or mentoring relationships, even enemies!

What do people in these relationships call each other?

Daily prompt for the #Conlangity worldbuilding game:

DAY 10
CREATE SOME VOCAB! What are some words or phrases to describe relationships in your conlang? This could be family, connections, friendship, romantic partners, teacher/student, boss/employee... whatever you want!

Nouns in Nummersil have several cases and suffixes. Gender only matters in personal pronouns, although it can have influence on the nominative.

Let's go back to our apple

nominative: malil (singular) / mala (plural)
genitive: maluë / maluëa
accusative: maluki /maluaki

This is something it's likely to take me a VERY long time to get fleshed out.
I found the idea of changing case off of intransitive vs transitive intriguing, so I may play with seeing if that interests me for Shallin-ethray

#TheDragonblood: Nouns are declined for four cases (nominative, accusative, genitive and dative) and two numbers (singular and plural). They can be one of two different genders (magical and nonmagical).

They tend to be modified based on gender and whether singular or plural.

#Conlangity 9. As I mentioned yesterday, plurals in Kraslan are accomplished with suffixes:

- Adding a -y to the end of feminine nouns (or -ly if it already ends in /y/ or in a diphthong or triphthong): arylo (wing) > aryloy
- Adding an -(l)i to the end of masculine nouns: 🧵

This is straight up homework now 😅
There are very few things that change nouns, namely pluralisation and negation. There is a animate/non-animate divide in general which changes which version of these is used (and a few other things).
Cases are marked by particles, so

Keeping it somewhat simple today (read: I need to research so many new things I'm unfamiliar with).

Plurality!

This is done with a suffix, -nal*, except with pronouns which would be -se or -(e/i)se.

*this may transform more if I do consonant assimilation.

#Paleotheos

So, to preface, Paleotheos use of multiple POV characters basically means if there is a language outside the ‘common tongue’ then it’s either translated on page or only described.

That being said, there is another language within the setting. Vaalbaran.

I think that Kirrhin has a lot of similarities to English in this case, regarding how nouns are modified, cases, and the use of varied articles. That said, there are some differences. There are, as an example, not gendered nouns, 🧵

Alrighty babes brace yourselves because I had WAY too much fun with this 😂

Nouns in Na'aqal have:
- 2 genders
- 3 numbers
- 8 cases
- 6 articles

The genders are masc/concrete & fem/abstract (please don't take this as a commentary on real human gender OK it's just language shit 😅)

Lots to work on between yesterday and today! Wow.
Right now when Nivani words become plural they do change! The word particle depends what type of thing is being pluralized. Animals are -ii, humans are -aa, weapons are -vi, etc. Only applies if the amount is unknown

I wracked my brain for this one, thought the language might decline. But I don’t know if that’s right.
I thought it might be gendered, but it might just be an ungendered language like english that has endings to point at such (actor/actress etc.)

So I ultimately come away with being🪡

We're deep in the grammar weeds now!

Today's question is: how do you modify your nouns, if at all?

Do they take different forms (changed spelling, added affixes, additional words) when they become plural? What about different genders or cases?

As usual, more info in the 🧵👇️!

Daily prompt for the #Conlangity worldbuilding game:

DAY 9
[GRAMMAR] Continuing the topic of NOUNS, let's talk modifications.

When/how do your nouns get modified? For example, if the noun is plural, is the ending different from its singular base form?

Do your nouns have different cases or genders?

Do they use articles, & do the articles change?

Light yellow text printed in two columns over an orange background showing a faint photo of a large open dictionary. Hosted by @professoremily.bsky.social.
Additional card with “HELPFUL TIPS,” light yellow text over the same background as the main prompt.

SINGULAR/PLURAL NOUNS
Don’t be afraid to get creative! Are there special forms for specific numbers? Are there any irregular plurals?
(e.g. child/children)

NOUN CASES
Cases are about the function of a noun in a sentence (e.g. as a subject, object, other). In some languages a noun may change form depending on its case.

GENDER & ARTICLES
In some languages, nouns have different genders that affect their spelling & articles:
La casa = “the house” [F]
El baño = “the bathroom” [M]
Articles can also be singular or plural (el/los, la/las), but not always. Some articles, like “the” & “a/an,” imply specificity vs generality:
“the king” vs “a king”
