Congregationalist pastor Edward Lawrence: those who have ventured to the farthest verge of woe are quickest to see want next door. Today "charity begins at home" means the family, full stop. Lazarus at the gate is presumably someone else's household.

Edward A. Lawrence, Congregationalist pastor in Marblehead, Massachusetts, took a pin to "charity begins at home." No one is quicker to spot want next door, he said, than the person whose giving already reaches the farthest verge of sin and woe. The wide heart sees the near need. Today the slogan has moved house, into the family itself, with manly marching orders that stop at the garden fence. Lazarus at the gate is presumably someone else's household.

Matthew 25: why the right hand? David Thomas (1813–1894) notes it's not doctrine: Christ was hungry, and you fed him or didn't. We'll casserole a fellow churchgoer, but hungry strangers moving nearer? Suddenly it's Scrooge asking about the treadmills.

Square black graphic. On the left, an engraved portrait of a curly-haired man in a dark coat, seated, chin resting on one hand, pen in the other; a faint caption beneath reads "The Editor of The Homilist." Below the portrait in bold white text: "DAVID THOMAS (1813-1894)," and in italics, "The Practical Philosopher." On the right, a white-text quote: "Why are some placed on the right hand [in Matt. 25]? What is the reason the Great Arbiter assigns? Hear it: 'I was an hungered, and ye gave me meat; I was naked, and ye clothed me.'"
