Wall of Light Desert Night by Sean Scully, 1999, Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth (Texas)

#ArtHistory #ContemporaryArt #ColorFieldPainting #AbstractArt

This piece belongs to Scully's famous Wall of Light series, which merges the solid feel of ancient stone walls with the soft, glowing nature of light.

Deep velvety blues represent the night sky, sun-bleached tones evoke the ground, and shimmering grays suggest moonlit desert plants. The work was inspired by a night drive into the Nevada desert and the Valley of Fire during a trip to Las Vegas.

The Green Earth by Victor Pasmore, 1979-1980, Tate Modern (London, UK)

#ArtHistory #ContemporaryArt #ColorFieldPainting

According to Pasmore "This picture is a completely independent abstract painting and not a landscape abstraction. The title was given after it was painted, to form a poetic metaphor." It develops a theme explored in a series of paintings made between 1968 and 1976, following Pasmore's move to Malta. He turned from relief construction to a more symbolic content, expressed in colour, shape and line. In the earlier of these works, as here, rounded, organic looking abstract motifs appeared to be held in space by dark rod-like forms.
