These weren't just vacation spots, but visual manifestos of dominion over nature. The #Roman wealthy used hydraulic concrete to build massive artificial platforms directly into the sea. Look closely at the #colonnade to see the tiny human figures used for scale.

MOSAIC OF A MARITIME VILLA WITH JOIST HOLES, 64-98 CE. MUSEO DELLE TERME DI TRAIANO

This maritime villa from the lower register of the Great Mosaic shows a massive Roman coastal estate, damaged at the top by the insertion of square wooden joist holes cut by Trajanic engineers. It features a sprawling basis villae, a stepped concrete substructure built directly into the sea to create an artificial, perfectly level platform. A long, multi-level colonnade dominates the structure. If you look closely between the columns on the right, the mosaicist has included tiny, ghostly white figures standing in the porticoes. These figures, statues or people, serve as scale markers, emphasising the ostentatious size of the private estate. Like the previous panel, all the valuable glass tesserae representing the surrounding water and sky have been systematically despoiled by imperial workmen, leaving the stone architecture stranded in bare plaster.
