While James Sellars Classical exterior was demolished following a fire in 1977 that destroyed the neighbouring Palace Theatre, its auditorium, complete with its original timber understage machinery (still present, but no longer in use), survived.

The Palace theatre was demolished in 1977, but the elephant heads and some other fittings were rescued by Clare Blenkinsop, the general manager of the Citizens, and the Theatres Trust, and they are now on display in the Citizens foyer.

One of the four rather beautiful golden elephant heads in the Citizens Theatre in Glasgow. They were originally part of the auditorium of the neighbouring Palace Theatre which was designed in an Indian style by Bertie Crewe in 1904.
