For the Chicago Fire anniversary, we jump ahead to a different lighthouse, the 1859 North Pier light. In 1871, danger came from land. Refugees found “the kindest reception and hospitality” there; the Magnolia ferried survivors west. #ChicagoHarborLighthouse #SaveTheLighthouse
Chicago’s first lighthouse opened in 1832. By 1844, Congress had appropriated nearly $248,000 to improve the harbor.
We highlighted the lighthouse on this 1839 map. Look at the new entrance. See the problem? Comment below.

Chicago’s lighthouse began guiding ships in 1832.
This 1834 survey, just 2 years later, shows streets and lots laid out for a growing city AND a new channel through the sandbar toward Lake Michigan.
Chicago was planning a city while rebuilding its harbor.
Last week: the lamps. This week: the keeper.
Chicago’s early lighthouse used whale-oil lamps. In 1835, keepers tended lights from sunset to sunrise and trimmed wicks every 4 hours.
No switch. No automation. Someone had to keep the light.
