opposition

Opposition is the standoff where two kings face each other with a single square between them, and the player who has to move is the one who must give way. Here White holds it.

boden's mate

Boden's Mate is a two-bishop pattern aimed at a king that castled queenside. The bishops work on crossing diagonals: one checks along a6 to c8, the other covers the dark squares b8 and c7 beside the king.

The Rook doesn't knock.

BATTERING RAM: your Rook's capture shoves the target a square further down the line.
Blocked path? It resolves as a +2 Attack strike instead.
Either way, something breaks.

desperado

White's bishop is entombed on a8. Every quiet move allows Kxa8, so the bishop cannot be saved. That makes it a desperado, and a desperado should not die for nothing. Bxb7 takes a rook defended by the king.

Chess diagram on a ChessVS board illustrating desperado. White to move. The bishop on a8 is trapped, and its only legal move is Bxb7, taking the rook before Black's king recaptures.

The Pawn that refuses to die quietly.

DEFIANT STEP: arm it, then capture with your Pawn. The target isn't taken. It's SHOVED one square back.

Position is power. Sometimes the best capture is the one that never happens.

Defiant Step Battle Card from ChessVS: armed before the move, the chess Pawn shoves its target one square back instead of capturing it.
