I went on the Stereo Chemistry pod to talk about--what else--stereochemistry! That being the topic of this year's #ChemNobel.
(Cut for time: me yapping about linocut, neutrinos, and a running joke among the science team concerning the chirality of cows.)

The @natureportfolio.nature.com Collection for the #ChemNobel is now live. I've included a screenshot of the top three articles - no reason, just because 😜.

#ChemSky

A screenshot of the first three articles in the Nature Portfolio Collection celebrating the 2026 Nobel Prize for Chemistry.

The main section heading says 'Symmetry breaking'

Below that is the first article, which is a news story entitled, 'Chemistry Nobel for solving mystery of how ‘handed’ organic molecules can emerge' - to the right of that are headshots of two men (the winners Kagan and Soai)

Below that is the second article, which is a paper published in Nature in 1995, with the title, 'Asymmetric autocatalysis and amplification of enantiomeric excess of a chiral molecule' - the authors are listed as 'Kenso Soai, Takanori Shibata ... Kaori Choji'

The third piece is a 'Making the paper' article that was written by Donna Blackmond and published in Nature. Because of how our CMS works, the title of the piece is listed as 'Donna G. Blackmond'; to the right of that is a headshot of a woman who is smiling (Donna Blackmond).

In nature, control of chirality at different hierarchical levels is manifested in processes such as protein folding and enzyme catalysis.

Like the apocryphal butterfly that flapped its wings and caused a hurricane halfway across the world, a faint trace of impurities in a prebiotic catalytic reaction could have induced the left-handed nature of all biological molecules.

@cenmag.bsky.socialOct 7, 2026, 10:07 PM

In the beginning, there were chiral molecules. RNA, DNA, proteins, and other biological molecules tend to be present as only either right- or left-handed. However, scientists are not sure how this homochirality emerged.

@cenmag.bsky.socialOct 7, 2026, 9:37 PM

Enantiomeric molecules that are chiral only because of substituents that have different carbon isotopes can generate chirality in asymmetric autocatalysis—a reaction in which a chiral product does double duty as a chiral catalyst for its own production.

#ChemNobel #NobelPrize #chemsky 🧪

@cenmag.bsky.socialOct 7, 2026, 9:36 PM

How single chirality emerged on Earth is a multilayered mystery that captivates scientists seeking to understand the origins of life.

#ChemNobel #NobelPrize #chemsky 🧪

@cenmag.bsky.socialOct 7, 2026, 7:31 PM

Researchers have shown that chiral solvents can act as the sole source of handedness in several catalytic reactions that preferentially produce a single enantiomer.

Ongoing effort to create a reflection of life’s protein-making machinery could provide access to mirror molecules for diagnostics, therapeutics, and more.

#ChemNobel #NobelPrize #chemsky 🧪

@cenmag.bsky.socialOct 7, 2026, 3:33 PM

So desirable are chiral molecules as pharmaceutically active compounds that scientists employ whatever methods they can and continually explore new ways to create their unique handedness.

#ChemNobel #NobelPrize #chemsky 🧪

@cenmag.bsky.socialOct 7, 2026, 3:33 PM

The concept of chirality is a central one in chemistry. Chiral chemicals, in which two structures are mirror images that cannot be superimposed, include amino acids and DNA.
