Something different, a #ChemEd #Chemistry #ChemSky intro to mass spectrometry. It just gives a high level overview, focusing on the spectrum, the peaks (molecular ion, isotope & fragment peaks) & the types of data (not how it is generated) & the 'fun' of different definitions for mass.

A one page introduction to mass spectrometry. This is just looking at the kind of output, a mass spectrum, that students will encounter and gives a brief explanation. It starts by trying to explain what mass spectrometry does (sorts ions by m/z), then shows a spectrum and indicates the kinds of peak that you might encounter before talking about where the data comes from (but not how it is generated) and then finally finishing with the fun idea that there are different definitions of mass.

This #ChemEd #Chemistry #ChemSky is a stopgap. It wasn't made for MakingMolecules.com (there is no blog post (& different colours)). It wasn't written for students but was written to jog my memory (guess what I'm doing this week is?).
Disclaimer done! I hope someone else finds it useful.
Enjoy?

This is a quick recap on the fragmentation of peptides in an electrospray ionisation ESI mass spectrometer and a list of the common amino acids with some useful information about them.
