✉️ [beta] Site updates #changelog
https://beta.groups.io/g/main/topic/121682729

Changes to the site this week: October 6, 2026: BUGFIX: On the Members page, the member label and color filters were ignored when you also entered a search term or sorted by a custom member data column, so the results included members without the selected labels or colors. Those filters now apply to searches and custom-column sorts too. API NEW: Added member label endpoints: /getmemberlabels lists a group's labels, /creatememberlabel creates one, /updatememberlabel changes a label's name, description, or color, and /deletememberlabel deletes one. They require the manage_members permission, and labels cannot be created in Basic groups. API NEW: /getmembers and /searchmembers can now filter the members they return. The filter parameter takes the same filters as the Members page (email delivery, posting status, message selection, not confirmed, and others), label_ids returns members with any of the given labels, and colors returns members with any of the given colors. label_ids and colors require the manage_members permission. API CHANGE: /searchmembers now returns each member's member_labels, as /getmembers already did. BUGFIX: When someone tried to join a group through a VPN or anonymizing proxy, the join form sent them to the home page without saying why, and no confirmation email was sent. The join form now explains that joins through a VPN or proxy aren't accepted and asks them to turn it off and try again. BUGFIX: In the online help center manuals, the expandable sections (headings you click to show more text) looked like links but didn't open when clicked, and glossary terms didn't show their definitions when clicked. Both work again. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: On phones and other narrow screens, the Sponsor This Group button didn't appear on a group's home page, because it's in the Group Information section, which is hidden on small screens. The button now appears below the member count on narrow screens. beta.groups.io October 7, 2026: BUGFIX: When you weren't logged in, clicking "I Agree" on the cookie notice didn't remember your choice, so the notice came back on every page. Your choice is now saved and the notice stays dismissed. BUGFIX: When using VoiceOver on an iPhone or iPad, some key presses caused an error, and the site's keyboard shortcuts didn't respond to them. Those key presses now work normally. BUGFIX: After you scrolled down a Topics or Messages page far enough to load more, the page didn't clean up after itself when you went to another page, so parts of the old page could keep running in the background. In the mobile app, the handlers that hide the bottom bar when the keyboard opens also piled up as you moved between pages. Pages now clean up properly when you leave them. INTERNAL: Pressing a key while a long Topics or Messages page was still loading no longer causes a JavaScript error. BUGFIX: If a draft save reached our servers but the confirmation didn't make it back to your browser, the editor kept re-sending that old save. Each attempt was refused so it wouldn't overwrite the newer copy, and you saw a "There was an error saving the draft" warning counting down to 240 seconds. While that went on, nothing new you typed was saved. We now recognize a repeat of a save that already went through, and the editor keeps saving normally. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: If a draft save got stuck on a dropped connection, the editor waited for it forever. It stopped saving your draft without any warning, so posting from Drafts could send an older version. A stuck save now gives up after 30 seconds, shows the retry warning, and tries again. beta.groups.io CHANGE: Clicking Send on a new topic, a reply, or a private message to a member now shows "Sending…" and disables the button until the page moves on. Before, a reply's Send button silently ignored further clicks if the first send stalled, and on new topics each click sent again. If sending takes more than 30 seconds, a message asks you to check your connection, and if the page doesn't change, to see whether your message was posted before sending it from Drafts. beta.groups.io October 8, 2026: NEW: Subgroups in Enterprise groups can now have subgroups of their own, one level deep. A subgroup owner creates them from the subgroup's Admin > Subgroups menu, the same way subgroups are created from the main group, so a department can organize its own members without involving the main group's owners. The new subgroup's address and web address are the parent subgroup's name, two hyphens, and its own name: for example sales--europe@yourdomain.org and https://yourdomain.org/g/sales--europe. That means two different subgroups can each have, say, a europe subgroup. Elsewhere on the site these groups are shown as sales | europe. This is being turned on for Enterprise groups on request. API NEW: /createsubgroup now accepts a subgroup as the group_id when the main group allows subgroups of subgroups, and /getsubgroups returns a subgroup's own subgroups. New bad_request errors describe why a nested subgroup can't be created: max depth, nested subgroups not enabled, nested subgroups require an enterprise org, root alias missing, and name too long. BUGFIX: On the Subgroup Members page, the Name and Email columns stayed in place while the table scrolled sideways, so with long names or addresses they covered the subgroup columns and the table appeared not to scroll at all. Only the Name column now stays in place, long names are shortened with the full name shown on hover, and the Email column scrolls with the rest of the table. NEW: We've made a large round of accessibility improvements across the website, to meet the WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility standard. People who use a keyboard, a screen reader, zoom, or high-contrast settings should find the site much easier to use. An updated accessibility conformance report (VPAT) is available on request. The changes below are the ones you're most likely to notice. CHANGE: Every page now has a "Skip to main content" link as its first item, which appears when you press Tab. Pages are announced to screen readers when you move between them, and each page has a main heading that names it. CHANGE: Everything on the site can now be used with a keyboard alone, including menus, dialogs, the message editor's image and attachment tools, file and photo actions, database tables, calendar events, chat, polls, map markers, and analytics charts. When you close a dialog or menu, the cursor goes back to where you were instead of to the top of the page. Buttons, icons, and form fields all have names that screen readers read out. CHANGE: Pressing Tab to a button now shows a clear blue-and-white ring around it, so you can always see where you are. It appears only when you use the keyboard, not when you click. CHANGE: Some colors changed so that text is easier to read. Green, red, and blue buttons and badges are slightly deeper. The light blue Info and orange Warning buttons and badges now have dark text instead of white. Several hashtag and label colors (such as cerulean blue, tomato, purple, and blush) are slightly deeper, with white text; the lighter colors now have dark text. Small gray text, such as dates and counts, is a little darker. Several dark mode colors that were hard to read, including table headers, the current page number, and some link-style buttons, were fixed. CHANGE: Links in sentences, help text, and notices, and the author links in topic lists ("Started by", "By"), are now shown in a heavier weight, so you can tell them apart from the surrounding text without relying on color. They're underlined when you point at them or move to them with the keyboard. CHANGE: Tooltips now stay open while you move the pointer onto them, and you can close them with the Escape key. The abbreviated badges on Your Groups and in your feed (P, M, NP, NMM, and others) now have their full meaning available to screen readers. CHANGE: The login form, two-factor code, and passkey recovery forms now stay valid for 20 minutes instead of 4. If one does expire, it's shown again with your email address kept and a message explaining what happened, instead of a blank login page. CHANGE: Error messages that pop up at the top of the page now stay until you close them, instead of disappearing after a couple of seconds. Other notices stay for 10 seconds and don't disappear while you're pointing at them or have moved to them with the keyboard. A failed image upload now shows a message that stays until you close it. BUGFIX: If your login expired while you were writing a message, your later typing could be lost, and the editor kept trying to save without telling you. The editor now keeps what you've written and tells you that your login has expired, with a link to log in again in a new tab so you can come back and send it. Likes and poll votes made after your login has expired now show an error instead of appearing to work. CHANGE: Switching a group between monthly and yearly billing from the Plans page now asks you to confirm, and shows the amount that will be charged, before anything is charged. Donations now show a Confirm Donation step with the amount before your card is charged. The amount is checked first, and a declined card keeps what you entered and suggests what to try next. CHANGE: Deleting a column from a database table now asks you to confirm and says that its data will be removed from every row. Bulk actions on the Members page now name the action and the number of members (for example, "Remove 3 members?") and say when it can't be undone. CHANGE: In chat, you're now told when the connection drops and when it comes back. A message you send while disconnected stays in the message box instead of being lost. New messages, deleted messages, and the typing indicator are announced to screen readers. The "jump to latest message" button can be reached with the keyboard and says how many new messages there are. CHANGE: In Ask, the question box stays in place while an answer is written, and screen readers are told when Ask is thinking, when the answer is ready, and if there's an error. The Copy and Post to Group buttons now have names. CHANGE: On phones, the full title of a topic, chat, or wiki page is now shown on the page itself, since the header can only fit part of it. On very short screens, such as when the browser is zoomed in a long way, the header and bottom bar scroll with the page instead of covering most of it. Pages no longer scroll sideways on narrow screens. NEW: When adding an image from the wiki's image library, you can now enter alternative text that describes the image for people who can't see it. CHANGE: The page after joining a group with a paid membership no longer reloads every few seconds while the payment is confirmed. It now checks in the background, tells you when your membership is ready, and waits for you to click Continue. CHANGE: Pages now tell browsers and screen readers which language they're in, matching the language you've chosen for the site, so screen readers use the right pronunciation. BUGFIX: Posting more than 25 new topics in 10 minutes now shows a message asking you to wait a few minutes, instead of the New Topic form appearing to do nothing. BUGFIX: In version 5.0 of the iPhone and iPad app, tapping a file in the Files section, or an attachment or photo download, always brought up the share sheet asking which app to open it with, instead of showing the file. PDFs, images, Office and iWork documents, text files, and common audio and video files now open right away in the app's viewer again. Other kinds of files still bring up the share sheet so you can choose an app that can open them. October 9, 2026: CHANGE: When a moderator sends a message to a single member from the Members page or a member's page, the subject now starts with [DM], as it does for messages members send each other from a profile. Before, these messages had only the group's subject tag, so they looked at first like they had been sent to the whole group. Messages a moderator sends to several members at once are unchanged. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: In groups without a subject tag, direct messages between members didn't have [DM] at the start of the subject. They now do. BUGFIX: Deleting a sub-album in Photos took you back to the top-level Photos page. It now takes you to the album the sub-album was in. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: When a moderator changed a member's email address, the Member Account Change Notification sent to that group's moderators said "A moderator in another group changed…", even though the change was made by a moderator of that same group. The notification now names the moderator who made the change, as it already did for display name changes. Other groups the member belongs to still get "A moderator in another group changed…". beta.groups.io BUGFIX: After you sent a new topic, reply, or private message, the "Sending is taking longer than expected" message often appeared about 30 seconds later, even though the message had been sent. It could show up on whatever page you had moved on to, such as a member's page or another message. It now appears only when a send is actually still in progress after 30 seconds. beta.groups.io The next #changelog will be published on October 16, 2026. Take care everyone. Mark

✉️ [beta] Site updates #changelog
https://beta.groups.io/g/main/topic/121558962

Changes to the site this week: September 28, 2026: API BUGFIX: Calling /updatemember without the member_labels parameter removed all of the member's labels. The labels are now left unchanged when member_labels is omitted; to remove all labels, send a single empty member_labels value. API BUGFIX: When /updatemember was used to create more than one new label at once, every new label got the first name in new_label_names, so only one was created. Each new_ ID in member_labels now uses its own name, color, and description. If a label with that name already exists in the group, it is assigned instead of failing. API BUGFIX: /getmember, /getmembers, and /updatemember never included the member_labels field in the member info object, even when the member had labels. They now return it for callers with the manage members permission. September 29, 2026: BUGFIX: In dark mode, the plain text and Markdown message editors showed dark text on a dark background, making it very hard to see what you were typing. Typed text is now shown in a light color. BUGFIX: When composing in plain text or Markdown with a signature turned on, reopening a saved reply draft showed only your signature instead of the draft, and the next autosave replaced the draft with just the signature. Reopened reply drafts now show their saved text. This affected all groups set to plain text only. BUGFIX: Fastmail users subscribed to a group's calendar feed stopped getting updates, because Fastmail's calendar service was mistakenly treated as an outdated web browser and sent a web page instead of the calendar. Calendar feeds now sync to Fastmail again. The same mistake could also block other apps whose browser identification included punctuation after the version number. BUGFIX: Creating the first subgroup of a group appeared to do nothing: the page stayed where it was, even though the subgroup had been created. Creating later subgroups went to the new subgroup's page, but the sidebar kept pointing at the parent group, so choosing Settings from the sidebar could lead to deleting the parent group instead of the new subgroup. Creating a subgroup now fully loads the new subgroup, sidebar included. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: After renaming a group or subgroup in Settings, most of the sidebar links still used the old name and led to an error page. The page now fully reloads after a rename, so the sidebar uses the new name. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: After deleting a subgroup, you were taken to whichever of your groups pages you had last visited. You're now taken to the parent group. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: On the Create Subgroup page, if there was a problem with the address or description, the subgroup address and visibility you had entered were cleared. They are now kept, and if the address is the problem, the cursor is placed in the address field. beta.groups.io CHANGE: When working with a subgroup, the delete button in Settings, the Delete page, and the confirmation dialog now say "Delete Subgroup" and refer to the subgroup, making it clearer which one you're about to delete. "THIS ACTION CANNOT BE UNDONE." is now also shown in bold on the Delete page. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: The Muted Hashtags and Followed Hashtags pages showed a "Your Groups" link in their breadcrumb that actually took you to your Feed. On phones, it was the only part of the breadcrumb shown. Those pages now show just their own name, like the other pages in your account's sidebar. beta.groups.io CHANGE: The Mute Hashtag, Follow Hashtag, and Unmute Hashtag pages now have a breadcrumb that links back to your Muted Hashtags or Followed Hashtags list. BUGFIX: The "Your Activity" heading on your account's Activity page was always shown in English. It is now translated. BUGFIX: Downloading a large file from a group's Files section over a slower connection could fail partway through with a "Network error", usually after a couple of minutes. It wasn't a size limit: our servers were cutting off any download that ran longer than that. Downloads now run until they finish. The same problem could also interrupt slow uploads of large files. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: An interrupted download from a group's Files section could not be resumed; your browser's Resume button started the download over from the beginning. Downloads can now be resumed where they left off, and your browser now shows the file size and time remaining while downloading. beta.groups.io INTERNAL: blockerd now blocks IP addresses with firewall sets on the load balancers instead of an nginx deny list, so adding or removing a block no longer reloads nginx. September 30, 2026: BUGFIX: If you were set to show 50 or 100 items per page and edited a topic's properties from the second or later page of Topics, clicking Update returned you to Topics showing only 20 topics per page, and paging kept using 20 until you left Topics. Your per-page setting is now kept. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: On the Edit Topic Properties page, Cancel always took you to the topic, even if you had come from the Topics list or search results. Update from a topic's own page took you to the first page of Topics instead of back to the topic. Both Cancel and Update now return you to where you came from. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: Members of a group that requires two-factor authentication, who hadn't set it up yet, couldn't add a passkey. It failed with errors such as "Failed to add passkey: The string did not match the expected pattern." Adding a passkey now works for them. CHANGE: A passkey now counts as two-factor authentication. Adding one satisfies a group's two-factor requirement, just like an authentication app, and the page asking you to set up two-factor now offers both options. If you have a passkey, you can turn off your authentication app even when a group requires two-factor. You can't delete your last passkey while a group requires two-factor and you have no authentication app. CHANGE: If your only second factor is a passkey, logging in with your password, a login link, or single sign-on now also asks for your passkey, or for one of your recovery codes, before you're logged in. Previously your password alone was enough. Passkeys only work on the site where you added them, so if you added yours on another site (for example, groups.io rather than your organization's own address), you're offered a button to confirm it there. As with authentication apps, logging in with Google or Facebook is no longer allowed for accounts with a passkey. CHANGE: Logging in with a passkey now always requires your device's fingerprint, face, or PIN. Security keys without a PIN set can no longer be used to log in. API CHANGE: For accounts whose only second factor is a passkey, /login and /authenticateloginlink now return 2nd_factor_required; supply one of the account's recovery codes in twofactor. /googleloginfinal and /facebookloginfinal now refuse these accounts, as they already do for accounts with an authentication app. INTERNAL: Disabling two-factor from the support queue or admin now also removes the account's passkeys, and the support queue offers it for accounts that only have passkeys. October 1, 2026: BUGFIX: Image descriptions (alt text) containing common punctuation, such as a colon, question mark, ampersand, curly quotation marks, or a curly apostrophe, were silently removed from images in wiki pages and messages, and saving the page again lost them for good. Screen readers then had nothing to read for those images. Descriptions with punctuation are now kept. Descriptions that were already removed can't be restored and need to be entered again. BUGFIX: After entering a wrong two-factor or recovery code when logging in, entering the correct code sent you back to the start of login instead of logging you in. You can now try again with the correct code. October 2, 2026: BUGFIX: Messages sent to a group from Proton Mail, and occasionally from other email providers, were sometimes bounced with "Invalid request, no reverse DNS", even though the sending server was set up correctly. It happened when a lookup of the sending server's name briefly failed on our end. A brief lookup failure now asks the sending server to try again later instead of bouncing the message, and we check with a second, independent DNS service before treating the lookup as failed. BUGFIX: Since September 30, some messages sent to a group from iCloud (me.com, icloud.com, mac.com) were delivered with a large block of raw, encoded text instead of the formatted message, and failed DKIM checks at Gmail. iCloud began adding stray characters to one of its message headers, and we passed them on to members, which made Gmail and other email programs think the headers ended early. We now remove those characters when a message arrives, so iCloud messages display normally. BUGFIX: When a member's Yahoo Mail account automatically forwarded to another address that rejected the message, the bounce recorded for the member just said "5.0.0", with no hint of the real cause. Yahoo had changed the format of these forwarding failure notices. The bounce now shows the forwarding address and the reason it was rejected, for example that the account doesn't exist, so members and moderators can tell that the problem is the forward and not the member's Yahoo address. BUGFIX: When sending a message to a member from their member page, clicking Discard took you to the group's home page, even though sending took you back to the member page. Discard now returns you to the page you started from: the member page, the Members list, an RSVP or poll responses list, or a chat. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: The Bcc: Me and Bcc: All Moderators checkboxes on the Send Message page, and the BCC Me checkbox when replying to the sender or the moderators of a topic, still had the old look. They now match the site's other checkboxes, and clicking the Bcc: Me and Bcc: All Moderators labels on the Send Message page now toggles their checkboxes. beta.groups.io BUGFIX: When a member with a group signature replied by email from a program that doesn't mark the earlier message as a quote, such as Samsung Email or Outlook, their signature was hidden on the website in the collapsed "..." along with the earlier message, because the signature was added at the very end, after the earlier message. When a reply is written above the earlier message, the signature is now added between the reply and the earlier message, where email programs put signatures. A signature that still ends up after the earlier message is now recognized and shown. Messages already posted are unchanged. beta.groups.io The next #changelog will be published on October 9, 2026. Take care everyone. Mark
