Chaco Canyon, New Mexico. 30mm, focused on the far opening so the nearest doorway falls away and the masonry reads as a frame. Chaco was a regional center for ancestral Pueblo people from roughly 850 to 1250 CE, and remains a sacred place across the Southwest.

#ChacoCanyon #NewMexico

A view through a sequence of aligned stone doorways in an ancestral Pueblo wall. The nearest doorway fills the frame and sits out of focus, its coursed sandstone blocks and heavy lintel softened to shape and texture. Deeper openings step back through shadow, and the farthest one frames a bright rectangle of the world outside: a flat of grass and low shrubs, a banded sandstone cliff beyond it, and white clouds stacked over a distant mesa.

Chaco Canyon, northwestern New Mexico, in April. Caught this walking between pueblos. 31mm wide open, in close on the deadwood and the one green shrub, letting the canyon wall behind go soft. Up close the ground there is mostly bleached wood and dry stems.

#ChacoCanyon #NewMexico

A weathered gray branch runs diagonally across the lower left of the image, its surface split into deep lengthwise grooves and worn smooth at the edges. A small shrub with narrow needle-like green leaves grows just to its right, holding sharp focus against a soft background. Beyond them a flat of pale dry grasses and low gray-green shrubs runs back toward a sandstone cliff face in warm orange and cream, thrown well out of focus across the top. A few small purple flowers show near the lower right.

Honoring New MEXICO. For #WallsOnWednesday. The ancient stone walls of Chaco Canyon, New Mexico, mirror the stone formation Fajada Butte in the distance (2024). #NewMexico #nature #photography #landscape #nps #nationalpark #nativeamerica #archaeology #chacocanyon #EastCoastKin #ECK #WCK #ruins

This photograph captures the rugged desert landscape of Chaco Culture National Historical Park in New Mexico, looking out from the ancient ruins of the Great House known as Una Vida.

In the foreground and mid-ground are the weathered, stacked-stone walls of the Ancestral Puebloan ruin. The masonry showcases the distinct architectural style of dry-stone layering characteristic of Chacoan great houses. Prominently framed in the background is the iconic sandstone formation known as Fajada Butte, rising sharply from the flat desert canyon floor under a partly cloudy sky

Honoring New MEXICO. For #rockintuesday, Fajada Butte, standing sentinel over the ancient ruins at Chaco Canyon in New Mexico (2025). #NewMexico #nature #photography #landscape #nps #nationalpark #nativeamerica #archaeology #chacocanyon #EastCoastKin #ECK #WCK #desert #southwest

This photo captures Fajada Butte, a striking geological formation rising dramatically from the desert landscape of Chaco Canyon, New Mexico. The central focus is a massive, flat-topped butte with distinct layered rock strata. Its rugged, steep cliffs transition into a sloped, debris-covered base that meets the valley floor.
