#Cemtember
Keith, Moray, Scotland

Twisty, turny place with a few tiers
A mix of people and occupations
A wild mix of textures and engravings
I could’ve done with that gate
Not being welded shut

Vaulting the wall to get a
Coffee at the Boogie Woogie
Wasn’t on my bingo card
Too lazy to walk around

Bidding farewell to the #cemtember tag.

Side shot of an angel on a monument, silhouetted under a tree branch. It is looking out at a large cemetery with obelisks, mausoleums, and a variety of gravestones.

St Ninians RC Cemetery, Moray, Scotland.

An eclectic mix of old and new
From different walks of life
Lairs of priests and of bishops
Crosses of wood and of stone
Even a man who, once he’s gone
Hopes to hear a fife.

#Cemtember A forgotten and abandoned graveyard by the side of the road. No sign, no church, no flowers, no tending.

A mid-sized rounded gravestone with carved handshake and “Harriet E, wife of Noah Foster, died 1877” stands above ragged grass near the trunk of a dead, blasted tree. You have to look closely to see the two smaller stones, their rounded tops barely visible in the weeds, which are as tall as Harriet’s stone. This cemetery had no sign and was near no church.

Macduff, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

The mix of those who share this space
The doctor, the fish curer, the flesher,
The mariners and stage acts
A place of peace beside the sea

#Cemtember Another gravestone being subsumed by nature.

A low angular stone, probably about a foot high in the back and a few inches off the ground in front, like another stone in the background. The tree was planted next to the stone is slowly absorbing it, roots and the trunk obscuring all but the letters “-usband… TS”

In about a decade the stone will have been entirely swallowed up. And the similar stone behind it, with a tree planted next to it, will be similarly disappearing.

I have more beautiful flowers to use for the 31 Days of Graves prompt, but none more fitting for the #cemtember contemplation of mortality. All things end, including memorials.

A gravestone has sunk so far into the ground that only one corner, showing a stylized circular flower with 3 leaves can be seen above the grass.

Tyrie, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

The books and stones tell the stories
Sad though they are
‘Her last thoughts were of her children’
And so, life goes on…

#Cemtember Druid Ridge Cemetery, Pikesville Maryland.

A green-patina life-sized sculpture of a naked man, right arm thrusting a huge feather above his head, left arm clutching his chest, knees buckling as he collapses at the moment of death, stands on a plinth. Behind him is a line of smaller, far less dramatic stones and green trees.

St Drostan, Old Aberdour, Aberdeenshire, Scotland

Father Ted moment?
Those coos are far away
The deid heid seems shocked
By the offering that someone left
Relieved - no bats in the building
An old font - perhaps
Wee heart for a wee bairn

#Cemtember Mt Olivet, Washington DC.

Vertical shot of a few gravestones. Three crosses of varying height. Towering over them on a tall pillar, a recording angel busily writes in its book against a backdrop of gloomy clouds.

The pepper pot
The falling angel
To catch a falling star
Killed in the line of duty 1881
I’ll not forget his name - Constable George Low

The running repair
Mort safes - signs of darker times
Of body-snatchers/resurrectionists/anatomists

#Cemtember Mount Olivet, Washington DC. Moving away from long shot landscapes to “I’m proud of this photo but it doesn’t match a 31 Days of Graves prompt.”

A tight grouping of gravestones against a cloudy sky. From left to right: an urn on a pillar half out of shot, a small figure and a broken column with a carved wreath, a few plainer stones of various sizes half hidden behind a tall monument on the right of frame. A living bird sits on the top of this last pillar, eyeing me.

#Cemtember Rose Hill Cemetery, Hagerstown Maryland.

For all the weeping willows depicted on gravestones, this is the only one I’ve actually seen growing in a graveyard. (Nearly kept this shot for the 31 Days of Graves “tree” prompt.)

On the left side, a row of mid-height rounded gravestones. On the right, a fallen obelisk leans against a square marker. In the middle, behind them all, a beautiful, lush weeping willow.

#Cemtember St Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Baltimore County Maryland

Two medium height gravestones in the foreground provide contrast to the obelisk, urn on a pillar, and angel on a pillar in the background. The angel has one arm stretched out toward the urn.
