I'm going with #Cassiterite ! Here with quartz and ankerite. From a friend's collection #MinCup26 ⚒️ #minerals

Small display box with a specimen of ankerite on which are clear quartz crystals, and dark colored euhedral cassiterite crystals.

Label: Cassiterite, Quartz, Ankerite
SnO2, SiO2, CaFe(CO3)2
4.D.02-40, 4.D.01-10, 5.B.03-20

#cassiterite because it’s not graphite

@mexporg.bsky.socialSep 16, 2026, 7:45 PM

#Cassiterite is critical ore of tin and very interesting and highly aesthetic mineral at the same time.

Check out our detailed Cassiterite overview:

This is a tough choice. Two amazing and important minerals in today's #mincup26 match.

But the #Graphite people have mobilized their armies, so I feel compelled to call uponn all of you to vote #Cassiterite!

I enjoyed learning about #Cassiterite today, but I like writing too much not to vote for #graphite. (Also was juat having a conversation about allotropes with a friend the other day, so it's sort of on my mind.)

We had writing without need for #Graphite in a pencil, at the same time #Cassiterite was critical at forming the first metal-based civilisations. This seems a no-brainer to me.

#MinCup26 today - a hard one! #Cassiterite - the amazing tin mineral from my native SW England, or #graphite probably the first mineral I was aware of as a toddler "where's daddy going?" "Going to Skåland, to the graphite mines on Senja again". Decisions! Have to think about it...

Kinda chic like #Cassiterite: an industrially vital tin ore that can grow elaborate contact and cyclic crystal twins from tiny, structurally matched seeds. Daneu et al. report functional materials, but make the crystal architecture dramatic in @actacrystb.iucr.org: journals.iucr.org/b/issues/202...

I love both. #Cassiterite has a storied history as a source of tin, which has shaped the history of humans for hundreds of years. #Graphite is just as storied. Both are incredibly useful even today. I chose graphite this time. #MinCup26

Last match of round 1 #MinCup26 - and to be honest both the structures of #Cassiterite and #Graphite are a bit, well meh. Cassiterite gets my vote for the fact is has tin in it, which seems a little more exotic that just carbon.

#MinCup26 Round 1 Match 16
It's a pair of industrially-vital minerals for the final match of the first round as tin ore #Cassiterite is up against elemental carbon #Graphite.
