#WaterfallWednesday
A long exposure shot of the River Caldew cascading over smooth rocks, Caldbeck, Cumbria last month (03/09/2026)
The name Caldbeck means cold stream and has Norse origins.

A woodland scene with the view of a small waterfall cascading over smooth rocks on the River Caldew, Caldbeck, Cumbria, England on a sunny September day.
It is a shot taken with a long exposure.
The view is framed by lush verdant trees on both sides of the river.
There are moss-covered stones on the river bank, and particularly vibrant on the dark rocky ledges in the left foreground.
The water flows over smooth rocks and dark rock ledges, creating small cascades.
In the background there are glimpses of light filtering through the green leaves.
The river is also illuminated where the sunlight breaks through the tree canopy onto patches of the foaming water.

The fast-flowing river once powered numerous local industries, including paper, bobbin, and flour mills.

'Un, deux, trois Deux Chevaux'
A row of Citroen 2CVs yesterday in Caldbeck, Cumbria.
Rather than indicating the vehicle's physical engine power, the name represented two units of taxable horsepower under the French vehicle tax system of the era.

The image shows three classic Citroën 2CV cars parked in a row along a quiet village street. In the village of Caldbeck in the English Lake District.
Three cars parked in a row - white, red and blue.
A traditional whitewashed and stone cottage stands behind the cars.
In the foreground an old, weathered wooden park bench sits on a cobblestone edge.
The Citroën 2CV is a legendary, minimalist French economy car produced from 1948 to 1990. Conceived to motorize rural farmers in 1930s France. With an ultra-soft suspension capable of crossing a ploughed field with a basket of eggs without breaking them.
2CV is an abbreviation of Deux Chevaux - "two horses"
Rather than indicating the vehicle's physical engine power, the name represented two units of taxable horsepower under the French vehicle tax system of the era.
Citroën designed the engine specifically to fit into this minimal, low-cost tax bracket to make the car affordable for rural farmers who were still using horses and carts
