Life-size painting of an urban scene in Paris. A man in a top hat holding an umbrella and a woman in a long fashionable dark dress walk arm in arm toward the viewer as other city dwellers with umbrellas walk in various directions across cobblestone roads and sidewalks.

September's theme: Labor
GUSTAVE CAILLEBOTTE (1848 - 1894), “The Floor Scrapers”, 1875. Musée d’Orsay, Paris, France.
Caillebotte loved to use bold perspective in his work.

Just as Millet made us feel the hard work being undertaken by the women in “The Gleaners” (featured yesterday), Gustave Caillebotte presented his men in “The Floor Scrapers” in a way that puts us, the viewers, right in the thick of it all. We can practically hear the scraping being done! Where Millet painted the rural poor, Caillebotte painted the urban working class – working, apparently, on the floors of his own Parisian apartment. Caillebotte loved to use bold perspective in his work and here he used a view from above to capture both the workers and the glorious pattern of their linear scraping. His workers are naked to the waist, which was quite shocking to the public and the art critics at the time (some critics labeled the painting as “vulgar”). After his rejection by the official state Salon, Caillebotte decided to exhibit with the Impressionists, who had similarly been rejected by the Salon. His version of Impressionism retained a closer tie with realism than many of his colleagues. He accepted the avant-garde vision of painting everyday scenes but always structured his compositions on geometric principles, reflecting his formal Academic artistic training. Caillebotte had the enormous benefit of coming from a wealthy family and so was not dependent upon selling his artwork in order to make a living. He generously supported his Impressionist colleagues by paying studio rents and living expenses for those struggling to make ends meet, and he personally financed and promoted many of the Impressionist exhibitions.
